About

"Mission Failed, We'll Get 'Em Next Time" is an audio message featured as a game over sound effect in Infinity Ward's first-person shooter series Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Since its debut appearance in the 2009 sequel Modern Warfare 2, the quote has been widely used by the fanbase as a catchphrase and sound effect in FAIL images and videos for humorous effect.

Origin

The quote "mission failed, we'll get 'em next time" was first introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the sixth installment of the Call of Duty (CoD) series and the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, released in November 2009. In the game, the quote is uttered by the character Ghost over radio transmission when the player dies or fails to accomplish the objective in a special ops mission. The quote was subsequently featured in the third and last installment of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare saga, released in November 2011. In both titles, the line is said by English voice actor Craig Fairbass.[13]

The earliest known use of the quote as a humorous sound effect in FAIL videos can be traced back to a Vine video[3] uploaded by Sock Jesus on March 29th, 2016.[14]

Spread

In the coming months, dozens of similar FAIL videos featuring the quote continued to emerge on Vine[2] and YouTube.[11] On June 6th, a single topic blog dedicated to curating the Vine videos was launched on Twitter. On June 10th, ObeseFailTV[1] posted a compilation of the Vine parodies to YouTube (shown below), where it garnered over 232,000 views in six months.

Outside of Vine and YouTube, the quote has been also used as the title of user-submitted posts on internet humor sites, most notably Imgur and 9GAG. Vine's FAIL remix fad has also been covered by online meme database MemeOrigins[4] and the YouTube series Behind The Memes.[12]
