About

Revive refers to a photoshop and image macro series featuring jokes about being revived in the game Call of Duty: Black Ops, often accompanied by the captions "Hold X to revive" and "Revive me, I have a ray gun."

Origin

In the Zombie Mode in the first person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops downed players can revived other teammates. On January 29th, 2011, GameFAQs Forums[1] member mistahtom submitted a post complaining about children who beg for players to revive them because they are equipped with the Ray Gun weapon in Zombie Mode matches.

Spread

On April 27th, 2016, Instagram user @whoskota[5] posted a photograph of United States President Barack Obama talking on the phone with the caption "Revive me! Dude I have the Ray Gun" (shown below). Over the next 10 months, the picture gathered upwards of 1,500 likes and 60 comments.

On August 12th, YouTuber mcsportzhawk uploaded a prank video in which he falls down in public and asks random people to "revive him" because he has "a ray gun" (shown below, right).



On December 1st, Redditor CheckUrKek submitted a photograph of deceased Cuban leader Fidel Castro at his funeral with the caption "Revive / Press & hold X to revive player" to /r/dankmemes[3] (shown below). On February 14th, 2017, Redditor kyletheloner submitted a photograph of United States President John F. Kennedy immediately after his assassination with the caption "Pls bro I have raygun" to /r/memeeconomy,[6] asking viewers "are revive memes potentially the next big thing?" (shown below, right).

That day, Redditor TroggyBoi submitted a picture of a casket with a swastika on it photoshopped with the "Revive" icon titled "'Revive me, idiots' – Adolf Hitler" (shown below, left). That day, the @gaming_memez[4] Instagram feed posted a photograph of a man laying on the ground clutching his chest with the "Revive" icon over his body and the caption "plz I have a ray gun" (shown below, right). Within 24 hours, the post gained over 8,600 likes and 240 comments. On February 15th, 2017, the /r/ReviveMemes[2] subreddit was launched for Revive photoshops and image macro examples.
