Overview

Champagne-gate refers to a series of altercations in the season 24 episode two of The Bachelor surrounding a bottle of champagne culminating in contestant Kelsey Weier accidentally spraying champagne on her face while drinking from the bottle. The dramatic events of that evening were widely discussed on TV and Twitter in the following week.

Background

On January 13th, 2020, the Bachelor Nation on ABC YouTube account uploaded "Champagne-gate Explodes at the Bachelor Mansion – The Bachelor" following the airing of the episode on ABC. The clip gained over 191,500 views in two days. In the episode, contestant Kelsey Weier yells at Hannah Ann Sluss for popping open champagne that she had planned to use for her own one-on-one with Peter. Although Sluss claimed that she didn't know the Champagne was Weier's, the two continued to argue until Peter brought Weier aside to open up another bottle which accidentally sprayed all over her face.

Developments

On January 13th, 2020, Twitter user @sanasdick^[2] tweeted, "so you’re telling me…..kelsey saved a special bottle of champagne for over a year and the producers told hannah ann to drink it with peter knowing it’s gonna create drama THE DEVIL WORKS HARD BUT THE BACHELOR PRODUCERS WORK HARDER #TheBachelor" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 19,700 likes in two days. Jezebel^[1] also applauded the producers for this episode in an article. Twitter user @taymur^[3] tweeted the difference in price between the two bottles of champagne (shown below, right). The tweet garnered over 400 likes in two days.

That same day, Twitter user @TheBachBabes^[4] tweeted about avoiding all the work they need to do to watch "Watching grown women fight about champagne" which received over 4,100 likes in two days (shown below, left). The next day, Comedy Central uploaded a clip from their show Lights Out with Davd Spade in which they discuss the event (shown below, right).
