Gay took office as Harvard's 30th president in June 2023. On December 5th, 2023, Gay appeared before Congress during a hearing on antisemitism along with the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During the hearing, Gay was asked about Harvard's policies regarding calls for violence against Jewish students and if "calls for genocide" violated Harvard's rules against bullying and harassment, to which she responded, "It can be, depending on the context" (shown below).

Online Reactions
Following the hearing, Gay's comments sparked a backlash on social media, with many criticizing her response to the question about Harvard's policies surrounding calls for genocide of the Jewish people.[2] That day, X[1] user @EllaTravelsLove condemned Gay's remarks and posted a photoshopped image depicting Harvard University as "Hamas University" (shown below).
On December 6th, 2023, the Harvard X[8] account released a statement from Gay clarifying that "violence against genocide against the Jewish community" was not allowed at the university and that "those who threaten our Jewish students will be held to account" (shown below).
Plagiarism Accusations
On December 10th, 2023, conservative activist Chris Rufo published a blog post[6] and a thread on X[5] raising accusations that Gay had violated Harvard's policies against plagiarism by paraphrasing and failing to properly cite sources in her academic work.
On December 12th, the New York Post[3] published an article claiming that they had reached out to Harvard about the accusations in October and received a response from an attorney stating he was "defamation counsel for Harvard University and Gay."
Resignation
On January 2nd, 2024, the Harvard Crimson[7] published an article announcing that Gay would be resigning from her position. That day, The New York Times[4] published Gay's resignation letter. In the letter, Gay stated that she believed it was "in the best interests of Harvard" for her to resign, and found it "frightened to be subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus."
