Overview
Gucci "Blackface" Balaclava Controversy refers to the public outcry surrounding a black balaclava designed by Gucci as part of their Fall Winter 2018-2019 collection. The balaclava features a long neck which covers the mouth, as well as a bright red hole for one's lips. When Twitter users noticed the design appeared similar to traditional blackface design in February of 2019, it caused outrage en masse, particularly because Ralph Northram's Blackface Controversy was happening concurrently.
Background
The balaclava was debuted as part of Gucci's Fall Winter 2018-2019 look, which debuted in February of 2018.[1] Some Twitter users pointed out the balaclava resembled blackface over the following year, though these tweets did not see much spread.[2][3] It was not until February 6th, 2019 that Twitter users began to take notice en masse, thanks in part to a tweet by @fuckrashida that gained over 7,600 retweets and 16,000 likes (shown below).
Developments
As the tweet spread, many Twitter users voiced their opinion that the balaclava resembled blackface. Twitter user @blubuttafly16 posted a picture comparing the balaclava to blackface art, gaining over 35 retweets and 75 likes (shown below, left). User chrxstianh__ did the same, gaining over 670 retweets and 1,100 likes (shown below, right).
Gucci released an apology stating they were committed to diversity and removed the item from its online shop (shown below). The controversy made national news, and it was covered by New York Times,[4] Vox[5] and NPR.[6] Many publications made connections to the ongoing Ralph Northram blackface controversy concerning photos of the governor of Virginia in blackface.
