Overview
Indonesia Anime Broadcast Censorship refers to Indonesian television companies censoring the anime Anima Yell in January of 2021 by cropping out the characters' midsections. The censorship has been discussed and compared to other countries and how they handle censoring the show in their broadcasts.
Background
On January 20th, 2021, Indonesian television Rajawali Televisi uploaded an announcement via their Facebook[1] page that they will be broadcasting the Anima Yell anime series starting January 22nd. The post received more than 2,200 reactions and 552 shares (shown below).
On August 28th, 2021, Reddit[2] user tradaaa uploaded to /r/anime video of the broadcast and the original anime side by side, pointing out how the Indonesia broadcast version had been censored by zooming in on certain characters. The post received more than 5,600 points (shown below).
Developments
Tradaaa's post was widely spread in Indonesian hubs online over the following days. For example, on August 30th, 2021, Facebook[3] user Jiss reposted the video. It received 616 reactions and more than 1,000 shares (shown below, left). On September 5th, 2021, Facebook[4] page Otaku Anime Indonesia uploaded a post that discussed the censorship comparison. The post received more than 2,500 reactions and 418 shares (shown below, right).
The censorship controversy later began spreading outside of Indonesian circles. For example, on September 5th, 2021, Facebook[5] page ACGer uploaded a post about the apparent censorship, receiving more than 1,700 reactions and 1,000 shares (shown below, left). The next day, Facebook[6] page Daily Dose of Anime uploaded the same post, comparing it with South Korean censorship. The post received more than 10,000 reactions and 1,400 shares (shown below, right).
Several media outlets covered the censorship controversy, including Comic Book[6], CBR[7], and Anime Senpai[8] published an article about it.
