Flat Is Justice / Delicious Flat Chest

About

"Flat Is Justice" is a catchphrase used by otakus and anime fans to express one's appreciation for female characters with flat chests, rather than big busts, most often in association with lolicon.

Origin

It's believed that the catchphrase was inspired by a dialogue from the Japanese visual novel Shuffle!, first released on January 30th, 2004, in which the character Mayumi Thyme proclaims that "a flat chest is a status symbol" in reference to her own bust.^[1] The dialogue was later mentioned in the fourth episode of the 2007 anime series Lucky Star by the main character Konata Izumi, spreading the quote through the anime community (shown below, left). In June 2011, the tenth episode of the anime series Steins;Gate was released, which included a scene wherein the character Mayuri Shiina tries to cheer up Luka Urushibara over her flat chest, translated as "flat is justice" in one of the fansubs (shown below, right).

Spread

On September 17th, 2011, GameFAQs user Starks submitted a thread titled "C/D: Flat is justice!", discussing which size was considered "flat".^[2] On September 17th, 2013, a Facebook community named "Flat is Justice" was created, gaining over 800 likes in the following years.^[9] On December 28th, 2013, MyAnimeList user AppleKendee submited a thread asking for the origin of the catchphrase.^[7] On April 2nd, 2014, cosplayer Joyce Poring uploaded a cosplay of the character Taiga Aisaka from the anime series Toradora!, titled with the catchphrase and displaying a plank next to her as joke towards her chest.^[3] On April 15th, Memecenter user mellnoia submitted a comic featuring screencaps from the anime series Hataraku Maou-sama! with humorous captions regarding the main character prefering flat chests.^[4] In the following two years, the picture got over 1,700 likes and 250 comments.

On January 27th, 2016, YouTuber Lost Pause uploaded a video discussing if flat chested girls were better than girls with big busts, gaining over 121,000 views in the following eight months. On June 20th, 2016, reddit user cubev10 submitted to /r/Animemes a Drakeposting picture featuring flat chested characters, gaining over 150 points (98% upvoted) and 20 comments in the following 2 months.^[6] The catchphrase also has some spread on communities like deviantART,^[10] Tumblr^[5] and 4chan.^[11]

Engineering Paper

In mid-January 2018, a paper titled "Analysis and Qualitative Effects of Large Breasts on Aerodynamic Performance and Wake of a 'Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid' Character" was released on the academic resource site ResearchGate.^[19] In the paper, author N. Rabino examines the aerodynamic capabilities of the large breasts belonging to theMiss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid character Lucoa. In the study, Rabino compared two different 3D model's of Lucoa with different sized breasts in a virtual wind tunnel, examing their drag, life and turbulence, concluding that larger breasts were more aerodynamic than small breasts (shown below).

On January 18th, Rabino submitted a post explaining the paper to /r/anime,^[20] where it gathered upwards of 1,300 points (96% upvoted) and 120 comments within 24 hours. At the end of the post, Rabino left the following "disclaimer":

"Disclaimer: You now exist in the same timeline where there is academic-level research on whether or not anime titties are aerodynamic or not. RIP "flat is justice". Moreover, I wrote this paper for fun and not in any way to fulfill my degree requirements. Also, Lucoa is not my waifu."

Various Examples

Delicious Flat Chest

Similarly to "flat is justice", the catchphrase "Delicious Flat Chest", or its abbreviation DFC, have been used to show appreciation for small busts on online anime communities. While it's believed that it origined on 4chan in late 2005 or early 2006,^[18] the earliest archived use of the catchphrase can be found on a post from the Neon Genesis Evanegelion fan forums EvaGeeks on February 11th, 2007.^[14] On April 22nd, 2007, the fanmade arrange Touhou Project album 東方萃奏楽 (Touhou Suisougaku) was released, including the song つるぺったん (Tsurupettan), which was translated with the catchphrase and helped to popularise it.^[12] On May 2nd, 2007, Urban Dictionary user floor submitted a definition for the acronym DFC, which gained over 2,600 likes in the following years.^[13] On May 2011, an article on DFC was created on Encyclopedia Dramatica.^[15]

Additionally, a character nicknamed "DFC-tan", who along with the big breasted "DCT-tan" represent the two main kinds of loli characters associated with the catchphrase. Both characters are often brought in discussions on the subject of flat chests vs big busts and have gained a niche fanbase, spawning some fan art. As of October 2014, both characters have roleplaying Twitter accounts.^[16][17]
