Overview
Jared O'Mara Comms Staffer Twitter Resignation refers to the dramatic resignation of Gareth Arnold from the team of Sheffield Hallam MP Jared O'Mara by using O'Mara's official Twitter account to publicly insult the MP. While many found the explosive resignation entertaining, others were suspicious Arnold may have had ulterior motives for the outburst, suggesting that he wished to disparage O'Mara and the British left wing and further his personal brand.
Background
On July 23rd, 2019, Arnold made several tweets from Sheffield Hallam MP Jared O'Mara's Twitter account insulting the MP and announcing his resignation. He ended the tweets by linking to a newly created personal account, which quickly gained over 22,000 followers.[1] In their entirety, the tweets read:
Comms Team signing off… forever: Jared, you are the most disgustingly morally bankrupt person I have ever had the displeasure of working with. You do not care about your constituents. You do not care about anyone but yourself.
I cannot and will not defend you and your vile, inexcusable contempt for the people who voted you in. You selfish, degenerate prick.
My fear is that now (as I quit) the rest of the staff will leave and once again you will close your office and stop helping anyone but still take your wages until you have the decency to call a byelection.
Leaving constituents desperate for representation again. No matter if they are having their homes taken away, their liberaties disgraced or being deported because of your inaction.
Sheffield Hallam deserves so much better than you. You have wasted opportunities which people dare not to even dream of.
Consider this my resignation.
Thanks
Gareth Arnold

In 2018, O'Mara was suspended from the Labour Party for five months after he was accused of having made misogynistic and homophobic tweets in his 20s.[2] Though he was eventually reinstated by Labour, he quit the party and continued to serve Sheffield Hallam as an Independent. In April, his constituent office was closed for weeks after most of his staff resigned.[3]
Developments
Arnold began tweeting from his newly launched personal account after the tirade on O'Mara's Twitter account by continuing to insult O'Mara, allege he was incompetent and intoxicated on the job,[4][5] and wondering if he himself had made the right decision.[6] He also reported he was contacted to do multiple interviews on television and for news outlets.[7]
Multiple news outlets covered the story, including the BBC,[8] to whom Arnold stated been working for O'Mara for eight weeks but known him for years. The outlet also reported that Arnold "rose to prominence in 2014 when he set up a social media account called Britain Furst which was intended to troll the right-wing political group Britain First. The following year he set up a satirical news website and posted fake news articles mocking tabloid titles."
While news publications and many Twitter users celebrated the dramatic resignation under the impression that Arnold was acting bravely out of his principles,[9][10] others looked into Arnold's history and found evidence suggesting he was perhaps acting opportunistically. A Twitter thread by user @Orwell_Fan_Fan[11] pointed to multiple instances suggesting Arnold was friendly with Britain First and politically right-wing himself (shown below, left), suggesting that Arnold may have had an ulterior motive to disparage the former Labour MP O'Mara. Arnold also tweeted from an alternative account on the day of Jo Cox's Murder implying that he wished Jeremy Corbyn had been killed instead (shown below, center). @Orwell_Fan_Fan tweeted that the evidence pointed to the idea Arnold was a "huckster" and that the story should be "GA acts daft for attention again" (shown below, right).
