Overview

Jess Glynne Sexy Fish refers to the controversy surrounding English singer-songwriter Jess Glynne's July 2020 Instagram post in which Glynne shared a selfie of herself in a hoodie claiming that she was not admitted to eat at a restaurant called Sexy Fish due to her clothing and called it discrimination. The post was mocked on Twitter for being inflammatory and misusing the word "discrimination." Her original post's caption was then used as a copypasta on Twitter paired with various images of people dressed inappropriately for a high-end restaurant.

Background

On July 6th, 2020, Jess Glynne shared an image of herself in a hoodie to Instagram[1] which received over 38,400 likes in two days (shown below). The post was captioned:

Dear @sexyfishlondon I turned up to your restaurant looking like this and you looked me and my friend up and down and said no you can’t come in and your restaurant was EMPTY. I then went to @amazonicolondon who greeted me and my friend with pure joy and we had a banging meal with wicked service. @sexyfishlondon please check yourself if this is how you treat people cause it’s rude, off putting, embarrassing and most definitely not inviting. We were made to wait and 2 members of staff came to look at us and make a decision based on our appearance. I think the attitude of your staff needs to change as that was just simply discrimination. Thanks and bye

To be fair, I don't get this. Why would a restaurant care what I'm wearing? As long as I'm not naked, dirty (meaning there's literal dirt on my clothes that might get onto other people, furniture, etc), smelly and other extreme cases it should be fine, right? What's wrong with a hoodie?

I think "discrimination" should be viewed as a broader term than "racism". People can be discriminated against for age, sex, religious beliefs, and outward appearance as well (including apparel). I agree that being denied service in an otherwise empty restaurant is rude and I can see that Jess Glynne was after an apology for it. She probably would have gotten one if she was an anonymous person and the venue didn't have a dress code.
