Overview

Jessica Krug Racial Identity Controversy refers to an online backlash directed toward George Washington University associate professor Jessica A. Krug, who confessed in a post on Medium that she pretended to be Black and Latina even though she was a white woman. After the post was published in early September 2020, it was widely circulated across Twitter, Reddit and other social media platforms, with many comparing her the Rachel Dolezal.

Background

On September 3rd, 2020, Krug published an article on Medium[2] titled "The Truth, and the Anti-Black Violence of My Lies," in which she confessed that she grew up "a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City" but had falsely adopted a Black identity, referring to herself "a culture leech." Additionally, Krug claims to believe in "cancel culture":

"I should absolutely be cancelled. No. I don’t write in passive voice, ever, because I believe we must name power. So. You should absolutely cancel me, and I absolutely cancel myself."

Developments

On September 3rd, 2020, Redditor HadakaApron submitted a YouTube upload of a Zoom call in which Krug speaks to the NYC City Council to /r/stupidpol[1] (shown below). In the video, Krug identifies herself as "Jess La Bombalera" and speaks in a fake accent.

Meanwhile, Huffington Post editor Philip Lewis tweeted[4] about controversy, referring to it as the "weird story of the day" (shown below, left). Shortly after, Huffington Post reporter Ja'han Jones tweeted[3] that he had matched witch Krug "a couple years back" on Tinder and that she criticized him "for not caring about Black people enough" (shown below, right).

Ja'han Jones @Jahan She deleted her Tinder so I can't show y'all, and I know none of y'all will believe this actually happened, but I matched with Jessica Krug -- the white woman pretending to be Black -- on Tinder a couple years back and she went in on me for not caring about Black people enough. 6:57 PM - Sep 3, 2020 - Twitter Web App

Meanwhile, Twitter user @LenaHaime posted several tweets[5] about Krug, claiming that she had complained about a white woman winning an award over her as an example of "how Black scholars are often overlooked in the academy (shown below).

Lena Haime @LenaHaime - 17h In my "Afro Latinx History" class, Jessica Krug discussed dynamics of white scholars engaging in black studies. She really had the audacity pull up an image of the white woman who won an award over her, illustrating how black scholars are often overlooked in the academy. LOL. 160 27 3.7K 28.8K Lena Haime @LenaHaime · 17h She repeatedly discouraged her students from supporting "American Dirt" due to Jeanine Cummins' whiteness. All the while she was taking scholarships, fellowships, etc. away from the very people they were designed for. 12 27 298 4.2K Lena Haime @LenaHaime - 17h Worst part is that the woman is brilliant. Her work is great and I really learned from her. Couldn't she have just done her thing without the brazen theft and deception????

How many times is this going to happen and how many times are people going to turn around and say that white people are privileged? How many fake black progressives have we discovered so far, including Shaun "Talcum X" King? Four? Five? There are upsides and downsides to any circumstance of birth. If there were no benefits to being black over being white in our current culture, we wouldn't see so many people doing this.
