Overview
Karla Sofía Gascón Offensive Tweets, also known as Karla Sofia Gascon Racist Tweets Controversy, refers to a series of tweets from Emilia Pérez star and Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón between 2016 and 2021 in which she expressed controversial views on Muslims, George Floyd, Adele and diversity at the Oscars. The posts started to surface in late January 2025 after Gascón accused the social media team of the Brazilian actress and Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres of attempting to undermine her work. Online, Karla's tweets spawned debates and criticism, while also instigating more memes regarding the already fairly negative audience reviews for the Emilia Pérez film.
Background
On January 30th, 2025, X[1] user @KindaHagi[1] posted an X Thread with several screenshots showing some offensive tweets written by Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón, claiming she "straight up have never seen tweets this racist from someone actively campaigning to win an ACADEMY AWARD. there are more than a dozen." The posts (seen below) amassed over 3 million views and 25,000 likes in a day.




The screenshots above feature several remarks written by Gascón that users accused of Islamophobia, as well as a long thread about George Floyd just days after he was killed by a police officer. Also on January 30th, Variety[2] shared part of her tweet about Floyd in an article, reading, "I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys Without rights and consider policemen to be assassins.”
On the same day, the X[3] page @ThePopTingz posted Gascón's comment on George Floyd's murder (seen below), which amassed over 9 million views and 99,000 likes in a day.

The offensive tweets surfaced a day after an interview of Karla Sofía Gascón for the Brazilian news outlet Folha de São Paulo, gaining significant attention online as the actress accused fellow Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres "of spreading hate against her and Emilia Perez's cast."[4]
Developments
Karla Sofía Gascón's Response
Following the backlash for the controversial tweets, Karla Sofía issued an apology on January 30th, 2025, writing that she "wants to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt." She continued, "I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain." The Hollywood Reporter[5] posted the actress's statement (seen below) that same day to its official X account, amassing roughly 520,000 views and 240 likes in a day.

Online Reactions
The controversial tweets quickly gained viral attention on social media, inspiring netizens to dig up some other offensive comments posted on X by Karla Sofía Gascón in the past, as well as sharing memes referencing the controversy.
For instance, on January 31st, 2025, X[6] user @solo_bec posted a GIF of people raising their hands from Mean Girls, captioned, "Raise your hand if you’ve been victimized by Karla Sofía Gascón." The tweet (seen below), amassed over 55,000 views and 2,000 likes in a few hours.

On January 30th, 2025, the X[7] page @21metgala posted a Karla Sofía Gascón tweet dated back to May 6th, 2020, in which made a comment considered fatphobic about the pop singer Adele, writing, "COVID passed, and she went overboard with the sleeves, or she went under the knife and they didn’t remove the skin from her arms.” The tweet (seen below) gained roughly 301,000 views and 6,300 likes in a day.
