Overview

Killer Mike's NRATV Interview refers to a controversial discussion between rapper Killer Mike and NRATV correspondent Colion Noir that aired on the National Rifle Associate (NRA) television station.

Background

On March 24th, 2018, rapper Killer Mike appeared on the NRATV television series Noir to discuss gun control, the Marjory Douglas Stoneman school shooting and the March for Our Lives. That day, NRATV tweeted[1] a clip of the video (shown below) with the caption "'I told my kids on the school walkout, I love you, if you walkout that school, walkout my house…we are not a family that jumps on every single thing an ally of ours does because some stuff we just don’t agree with.' -@KillerMike #MarchForOurLives" Within two days, the post received more than 4,900 retweets and 10,000 likes.




Development

Online Reaction

Many online reacted with surprise and disappointment. That day, Twitter [2] @BritiniDWrites posted a gif of Oh No, Baby, What Is You Doing? with the caption "Killer Mike was on NRAtv?" The post (shown below, left) received more than 1,100 retweets and 5,000 likes in two days.

Others were surprised that Killer Mike would appear on NRA TV, which has been accused of having racial bias in the past. Twitter[3] user @tariqnasheed tweeted, "I love Killer Mike.Thats my brother. He made some excellent points about Black gun ownership. The problem is, he is talking about it on the NRA platform & the NRA could give LESS THAN A DAMN about protecting Black people's 2nd Amendment rights. Ask the family of Philando Castille." The post (shown below, center) received more than 7,400 retweets and 32,000 likes in two days.

Others, however, did agree with Killer Mike's views. That day, Twitter[4] user @diviroxx tweeted, "While I'm no fan of the NRA I get where @KillerMike is coming from. Who do you think will be affected the most by gun control, black folx will be denied the right more frequently and until they stop killing us in the street, I'm keeping my gun." The post (shown below, right) received more than 140 retweets and 670 likes.

That day, Twitter[6] published a Moments page about the interview.

On March 25th, Redditor posted about the interview in the /r/The_Donald [5] subreddit. The post received more than 4,500 points (93% upvoted) and 100 comments.

Killer Mike's Apology

The following day, Killer Mike released an apology for the interview, stating that he did not mean to disparage or demean the March for Our Lives and was not meant to be used in contrast of the March. He said, "I sat with people I might not always agree with […] I did an interview about black gun ownership in this era. That interview was used a week later by NRATV to disparage a very noble campaign that I actually support […] I want to say first I'm sorry guys. I do support the March -- and I support black people owning guns. It's possible to do both."

The apology (shown in two parts below) received more than 5,000 retweets and 15,000 likes collectively.[7]

That day, Killer Mike's bandmate El-P tweeted[8] his thoughts on the controversy. In the statement (shown below) he addressed the difference the two share, but "can not and will not ever turn my back on this man." The post (shown below) received more than 2,900 retweets and 15,000 likes in 24 hours.

Additionally, that day, Twitter[9] published a Moments page regarding the apology.


@therealelp 2 things i need to say ive been noiding oT saying anytning until mike nad a cnance to make an orficia statement. we are our own men and we speak for ourselves individually. we are not afraid to disagree with each other and we often change each others perspectives. thats the respect and an understanding between us. there are real differences in our perspectives but our common ground gets translated to run the jewels music for but this one's for me. i need, as a man and an uncle/brother/sonMuture husband to myifetime. more than me, more than most. fiancee, human and maybe a father one day to clarify where my head and heart are in respect to something. its not in opposition to anything, its simply how i feel and its for the is life. he stands up when others can't or wont. he tries when others don't. time and time a lot of people are saying a lot to me directly about mike online. please know this about ne: i don't drop friends from my life because i disagree with them or the way they went abo etting a message out, even it goes wrong. not when i know their heart and know for a fact you hat they care more and try harder to help other people on a daily basis than most do in a thats mike. we know this guy. he f------ cares. its what sets him apart in his music and gain. this is a guy who's made me cry from the power of his words one minute and made ne spit whatever liquid i was drinking out of my face as i convulsed with laughter the next. i i am personally incredibly inspired and blown away by the bravery and emotion of an llhonesty he helped me get back in touch with a hope for and a love of the human race tha entire generation of young people standing up and trying to change the world. i've watched with awe and excitement as the new wave of young heroes has stepped in andl demanded to be heard. these are heroes forged in pain and loss and love. they are connected to the truth of what is and has been happening and they are realizing they are more powerful than they knew. its beautiful to behold and the old guard is quaking in their ve been around the block and i know a good person when i see one. i know who's gonna boots, as they should be. i believe in these young people. we must show deference to tand next to me and next to you and fight. if you've been watching mike over the years you them. we must listen to them. this is their world and we have been taking terrible care of it cnow it too. if you havent, look closer and them. despite anything you may believe, it doesn't nullify that fact that these people ou'l see it have eamed your/our ears and they have earned it the hard way. they are telling us We oi can not and will not ever turn my back on this man. he wouldn't turn his on me. or have to change. we can not dismiss that. we can not delude ourselves in to thinking ou we've got it all right or that their demand for a safer existence is somehow diametrically opposed to someone elses. so to those from Parkland and around the country and world, l including those communities and victims that haven't gotten the same attention: please im cause its so stressful to watch when it could have been avoided. know that, for what its worth, you have an ally and friend in me. had let drift out of frustration bordering on apathy. this is a guy who looked at a man froma ifferent race and background and said "yes, i see something in this person. i want to roll ith this person, despite how different we are. we can be allies and friends." despite our many differences (and i promise you they are vast and often hotly debated) and yet he's a person. he stumbles and he makes bad decisions sometimes and he oesn't always get his messages across or even protect himself and i wanna f-----' strang but the fact is mike is someone i and many of you KNOW consistently and ferociously ries to bring some light and love to this world. you simply cant deny that. so while i'm and to any organization that opposes, slanders or seeks to discredit these people trying ummed at the way this unfolded, i will always f--- wih him desperately to change their world in some real way for the better, make no mistake: we aren't on the same "side", as i believe that any "side" that looks at empathy as a weakness because i know the and change as a threat can not be connected to the human spirit and therefore can not be now we need mike out there trying, like he always has, warts and all. and he doesn't need me to defend him but f--- that here we are and I'm doing that. only way to have a perfect track record out there is to never try. and i
