Part of a series on Marriage Proposal Reaction Videos. [View Related Entries]

About

A Promposal is a surprise event organized by a student and presented to his/her romantic interest as an invitation to a prom dance. Similar to the phenomenon of marriage proposal videos on YouTube, these elaborately staged events are documented in photographs or videos and shared online, most notably on Instagram.

Origin

On March 27nd, 2012, earliest known viral instance of a high school promposal video was uploaded to YouTube by Kaelen Walsh, who asked his girlfriend to the prom by stuffing 500 ping pong balls with the word "prom?" written on them in her locker. That same day, Nour Rizk uploaded a video of his brother asking his best friend to the prom through a surprise flash mob event involving dozens of his classmates. As of April 2016, the two videos have garnered more than 2.1 million views and half a million views, respectively (shown below).

As of April 2014, the video has gained over 250,000 views.

On June 28th, 2012, Instagram user mandy1657[8] posted a photo of her boyfriend’s promposal in which his friends spell out the question “will you go to prom with me?” using their bodies with the hashtag #promposal, a portmanteau word derived from "prom" and "proposal."

On April 5th, 2013, YouTube McKane Andrus[3] uploaded a video which represented a backlash against elaborate promposals titled "The Senn Way of Asking Someone to Prom," which featured a teenage boy describing promposals as over the top and describing his own video as satire, before twerking on a girl wearing gold short-shorts with "prom" written on the butt. As of April 2014, the video has gained over 7.7 million views.

Here we see the normie male in his natural habitat. A yearly mating ritual occurs soon. A curious species, the normie does not make a call or a cry as other mammals do to attract a mate. Rather, they undergo the complex "Promposal" The rules of this animalistic ritual are still not entirely understood. While the Chads, a subspecies of the normie, need not put so much effort in this endeavor, we have measured a correlation between the awkwardness of the specimen, and the grandeur of their proposal.
