Overview
Russell Brand Sexual Assault Allegations refers to discussions about Russel Brand following an investigation published on September 16th, 2023, by British newspapers the Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4's Dispatches in which four women leveled accusations of sexual assault against British comedian Russell Brand. Brand was defended by various conservative public figures, including Anna Khachiyan of Red Scare, the Tate brothers, Tucker Carlson, Elon Musk and Ian Miles Cheong, among may of his fans who attempted to label the accusations as a conspiracy against Brand. The police investigation into Brand's history began soon after the article was published.
Background
Russell Brand was accused of leaning into COVID-19 denialism and conspiracy theories[3] following the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. After facing YouTube censorship, Brand moved his show Stay Free with Russell Brand to Rumble, a platform known for hosting conservative creators and many others who had problems on YouTube.
On September 16th, 2023, Russell Brand took to his YouTube[1] and various social media to release a statement denying what he called "very serious criminal allegations." Brand did not specify the allegations, but insisted that his relationships have always been consensual. The YouTube video is titled, "So, This Is Happening," and gathered over 1.2 million views in two days (seen below).
Later that day on September 16th, the British Times[2] published an investigation (seen below) led by journalists from the Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4's Dispatches. The article delved into Brand's history with women, focusing on four women who alleged that Brand had sexually assaulted them, with one accuser reportedly being 16 at the time of her relationship with Brand.
Developments
Some users noted Brand's editing choices in his preemptive video addressing the allegations. In particular, Brand's video contained a cut in the sentence in which he asserts that "during that time of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely always [cut] consensual." This was noted in a video uploaded by X[16] user @Liv_Agar on September 16th, 2023, gathering over 35,000 likes in two days (seen below).
