About

#StopCookieRunNFTs refers to the hashtag used by fans of the video game series Cookie Run to demonstrate opposition to the parent company Devsisters' intention to introduce NFT services to their future projects. The hashtag became a trend on Twitter in late 2021.

Background

On November 10th, 2021, Twitter[1] user koffeebeecookie posted a tweet that included a hyperlink to an official announcement from the Devsisters team that announced the NFT project within the game. Over the course of two months, the tweet received roughly 1,200 likes but was ratioed with more than 2,200 quote tweets.

In subsequent quote tweets and replies to the tweet from Devsisters on November 10th, 2021, many fans showed their opposition to the developer's decision. Twitter[2] user EsmeMarion, for instance, posted a tweet that attached a protest graphic, originally posted in a Discord server. The tweet (shown below) received roughly 8,300 likes over the course of one month.

friday night cherry-coloured funkin' || O @EsmeMarion Hey everybody, someone on the official CROB server made a much more detailed and accurate version of my protest image, as people were believing NFTS were being added into the game - spread this one instead please. #StopCookieRunNFTs NFTS are -a pyramid scheme -used for money laundering -used to steal artwork from others -not a true way of owning artwork -a passing fad -bad for the environment We do not want Cookie Run NFTS or NFT based games from Devsisters. The Cookie Run playerbase asks that you reconsider this decision. #StopCookieRunNFTs NFTS are -a pyramid scheme -used for money laundering -used to steal artwork from others -not a true way of owning artwork -a passing fad -bad for the environment We do not want Cookie Run NFTS or NFT based games from Devsisters. Also on November 10th, a post was made to the /r/Cookierun[3] subreddit by Redditor problematicperiplum. The post (shown below) detailed how Mic Mac was aware of the protests and reiterated, "NFTs are a pyramid scheme fad." Over the course of two months, the post received over 900 upvotes.

Posted by u/problematicperiplum 2 months ago Devsisters plans on making Cookie Run NFTS. That's not good at all. 903 Discussion UPDATE: Mic Mac is aware of the protests and will be directing the feedback to the developers. What will come of this is unknown for now. https://www.devsisters.com/ko/pr/?detail=271 In a recent public relations post summarizing Devsisters earnings, the end mentions: "그리고 ν˜„μž¬ 개발 진행쀑인 'μ„Έμ΄ν”„ν•˜μš°μŠ€'와 'λΈŒλ¦μ‹œν‹°', 'νŒŒν‹°νŒŒν‹°', 'μΏ ν‚€λŸ°: μ˜€λΈμŠ€λ§€μ‰¬' λ“± μ°¨κΈ° κ²Œμž„ ν”„λ‘œμ νŠΈ 및 마이쿠 ν‚€λŸ°μ˜ 팬 ν”Œλž«νΌμ„ ν¬ν•¨ν•œ μ‹ κ·œ μ„œλΉ„μŠ€ λ“± μƒˆλ‘œμš΄ μ„±μž₯ 동λ ₯의 κ°€μ‹œν™”μ—λ„ 속도λ₯Ό λ‚Έλ‹€. Roughly translated, it means that Devsisters plans to make Cookie Run NFTS as well as NFT-based games. If this is true, I am more than willing to no longer monetarily support Devsisters and their games. NFTS are a pyramid scheme fad and are designed to rake money in while having unnecessarily large amounts of energy consumption. I am unwilling to support companies and entities who are doing NFTS monetarily, including Discord, whom has announced NFT integration. As a fan, I am politely asking for this to be dropped. News outlet We Got This Covered[4] was one of the first online to report about the controversy, posting their article on November 10th as well.

Within Cookie Run: Ovenbreak's official Discord server, one of the moderators announced their departure from the game as a result of Devsisters' NFT decision (shown below).

H|They/Them Today at 10:46 AM Technically this channel is for feedback related to the game, and you know what? This whole thing-NFTS– is just the straw that broke the camel's back. Devsisters has consistently been making questionable decisions over the past few years, and I've wanted to support the creative team, but this is just one of many things that drives people away. OvenBreak has been becoming less and less beginner-friendly. Sure, the main story mode helps, but changing Trophy Race? Changing Cookie Trials? The game becomes more and more difficult to progress through without paying, and don't even get me started on Kingdom. I've stayed here for the community. I can't in good faith support the company anymore when they continue endorsing bad business practices. I'm officially quitting all Cookie Run games, and reversing your decision isn't going to make me change my mind. Devsisters shouldn't even consider things like this in the first place. (This is a personal statement, nothing to do with me being a moderator. Carry on, folks.) 121

On November 10th, Twitter[5] user @NewPuddingDX also made a Don't Turn Me Into Marketable Plushies post, depicting the character GingerBrave turning into an NFT. The tweet (shown below) received roughly 5,300 likes over the course of two months.

Response from Devsisters

On November 15th, 2021, Devsisters released a statement via their Twitter[6] page in response to the backlash. The statement (shown below) received roughly 1,500 likes and 1,500 quote tweets over the course of two months.
