"Free Bread" Debate refers to a viral question posited by Twitter user @slicksista, who asked "isn’t it very tacky for somebody to eat the free bread as soon as you get it?" The question was widely mocked online by people who found the question ridiculous, and particularly her justification of, "you should wait five minutes before reaching for the bread. if you that hungry you should’ve had a pregame meal."

Origin

On July 6th, 2021, Twitter user @slicksista^[1] posted a poll to Twitter with the question, "had this argument in a gc but i wanna know the truth. isn’t it very tacky for somebody to eat the free bread as soon as you get it?" The poll received over 360,000 votes, with an overwhelming amount of voters voting "no," resulting in a 97.3-2.7 ratio of "no" to "yes" votes (shown below, left). In a follow up tweet, @slicksista argued, "you should wait five minutes before reaching for the bread. if you that hungry you should’ve had a pregame meal."

Spread

The question was widely mocked online by users who found the question and her reasoning ridiculous. The original tweet received a ratio of 17,000 quote-tweets to 1,500 retweets. Several Twitter users made jokes about the post. For example, user @queenjamesss_^[2] posted a GIF of Tyler, the Creator in mockery the original tweet, gaining over 18,000 retweets and 119,000 likes (shown below, left). Justin Whang posted a still from SpongeBob making fun of the question,^[3] gaining over 130 retweets and 2,800 likes (shown below, right).

Despite the mockery, @slicksista continued to defend her take, to the point of trolling her critics. On July 7th,^[4] she posted a bait-and-switch apology letter in which it initially appeared she was apologizing for her take but instead doubled down on it.
