About
Aborted GF is an exploitable spinoff of the Ideal GF image macro meme that grew in virality in the wake of the leaked Roe v. Wade document that suggested the United States Supreme Court is potentially overturning the landmark decision on abortion in early May 2022. Many of the memes replace the GF of the original with a humorous character and add dialogue suggesting that character was never alive.
Origin
The earliest known Aborted GF image (shown below) was posted to 4chan on July 9th, 2018. That same day, Twitter user LokiXY[1] posted a screenshot of the potential original thread that created Aborted GF.
Spread
Over the following several years, variations on the Aborted GF image, generally with a pro-life political slant, spread on social media. For example, on May 15th, 2019, Twitter user @RccTurbo[2] posted several variations that appear to come from 4chan and try to elicit sympathy for the "aborted" character in the image (examples shown below).
On May 6th, 2022, amidst heightened discussion on abortion in the wake of the leaked Supreme Court document suggesting Roe v. Wade could potentially be overturned, Twitter user @ByYourLogic[3] reposted the original Aborted GF image as a means of shitposting. This kicked off a thread where people posted many humorous and nonsensical variations on the meme. For example, user @breakfastpizza[4] posted an example featuring "Aborted Horse," gaining over 1,600 retweets and 17,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). Twitter user @porcuslime[5] posted a variation using the NYC Guido character, gaining over 330 retweets and 4,300 likes in three days (shown below, right).
