The Gogo Dance is a viral dance challenge from TikTok that uses the song "Gogo Dance" from Dominican hip-hop artist El Alfa "El Jefe." Following the song's release in April 2022, a dance became associated with it involving shaking one's head, moving one's hips and twerking in a circle.

Origin

On April 7th, 2022, Dominican hip-hop artist El Alfa "El Jefe" posted the official audio for his track "Gogo Dance" to YouTube, [1] earning roughly 8.7 million views over the course of six weeks (shown below).

On April 9th, 2022, El Alfa then posted a TikTok[2] showing him in the driver's seat of his car dancing to the new track. Over the course of five and a half weeks, the video received roughly 12.6 million plays and 1.1 million likes (shown below, left). On April 17th, TikToker[3] manoliitoo.4 posted a video where he and his friends are dancing to the "Gogo Dance" track, spinning around in a circle and shaking their butts to the beat. Over the course of one month, the video received roughly 1.3 million plays and 140,300 likes (shown below, right).

On April 21st, 2022, TikToker[4] david_beltre28 posted a video of him and his friends duplicating the dance, earning roughly 2.3 million plays and 174,100 likes in one month (shown below, left). On April 22nd, TIkToker[5] jramirez_34 posted a video lip dubbing the song and doing the dance with less hip movement, earning roughly 1 million plays and 124,400 likes over the course of one month (shown below, right).

Inspired by these TikTokers, many creators on the app picked up on the dance trend going into May 2022. For instance, on May 8th, verified TikToker[6] malutrevejo posted her version of the trend, earning roughly 12.7 million plays and 1.9 million likes in 10 days (shown below, left). On May 16th, TikToker[7] graciebon1 posted her version, earning roughly 1.78 million plays and 131,100 likes in two days (shown. below, right).

On May 16th, 2022, El Alfa "El Jefe" uploaded the official music video for "Gogo Dance" to YouTube[8] where he and others are performing the viral dance. In two days, the video received roughly 995,900 views (shown below).
