About

Vishawn is an online nickname for the Marvel character Vision when he wears a black turtleneck on the Disney+ series WandaVision. The nickname arose in popularity on Black Twitter, where memers posted image edits of Vision in the turtleneck to feature other fashion accessories associated with African American culture (similar to Avengers with Acrylic Nails Photoshops).

Origin

On March 5th, 2021, the WandaVision episode "The Series Finale" aired on Disney+.[1] In the episode, the character Vision (portrayed by Paul Bettany) appears in a black turtleneck. That day, Twitter [2] user @gooonicorn tweeted two photos from the scene, with the caption, "I think we can all agree that Vision…" The tweet received more than 84,000 likes and 17,000 retweets in less than three days.

That day, Twitter[3] user @LuxangelllAngel posted the earliest known usage of the name "Vishawn" in this context. They wrote, "Baby that’s not Vision that’s Vishawn" (shown below).

Spread

That day, people began posting image edits of the character. For example, also on March 5th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @tonestradamus posted an edited version of the image in which Vision wears a gold chain around the neck. They captioned the post, "When I catch her looking at me in the function." The post received more than 73,000 likes and 13,000 retweets in less than three days (shown below, left). Twitter[5] user @JeauxVaughn retweeted the image and added the caption, "Vishawn." The post received more than 54,000 likes and 13,000 retweets in less than three days (shown below, right).

The following day, on March 6th, the trend had extended to other image edits, following a similar course as Avengers With Acrylic photoshops, in which white characters are given fashion accessories and styles commonly associated with the Black community. including variations that show Vision with a headwrap, teeth grills and gold earrings. That day, Twitter[6] user @KevOnStage four examples from the trend and wrote, "Why are Black people doing this to Vision?! 😂😂😂" The tweet received more than 36,000 likes and 7,000 retweets in less than 24 two days (shown below).

Several media outlets covered the meme, including Complex,[7] Revolt,[8] HITC,[9] HipHopWired,[10] BlackSportsOnline[11] and more.
