About

Gracias A Dios Nací En Latinoamerica refers to an image macro and reaction image of Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants praying. The image is accompanied by this text, which translates to "Thank God I Was Born In Latin America." The image's background is of the favelas in Valpaíso, Chile. The meme gained popularity in late February 2022 as a way to express appreciation (sometimes ironically) for the culture, funny memes and other topics related to Latin America in general.

Origin

On February 2th, 2022, the Instagram meme page @donde_subo_cosas_y_comparto[1] posted the first meme that paired an image of a Patrick Star with the caption in Spanish "Gracias A Dios Nací En Latinoamerica," with the post gaining approximately 100 likes in seven months (see below).

Spread

A few days after being posted on Instagram, the meme was uploaded on February 27th, 2022, to the Reddit[2] community /r/brasil, receiving 2,500 likes and 227 comments. Over the next few months, people started to use the meme often when a post related to any Latin American culture or country was mentioned, like in this tweet by @vgla04 showing a Venn diagram parody featuring Latin American countries. The tweet, posted to Twitter[3] on May 6th, 2022, received 6,000 likes and 214 retweets in five months (seen below).

Another case of the meme being used comes from this September 24th, 2022 viral video of a mom throwing a flip-flop at her running daughter and hitting her perfectly from a considerable distance. The post, uploaded to Twitter[4] by @acervogeral, received 155,000 likes and nearly 2,000,000 views in one week.

Being in Latin America is like the Zelda timeline: you are born thankful to be in here, and then the timeline splits in three:

1.- You continue to live in Latam, with a humble yet happy life.
2.- You escape successfully.
3.- "Fallen Hero Timeline": you try to improve things, only for you to be "suicided" by some hired thugs sent from a drug cartel, a mining/logging company, a corrupt government or all of the above.
