Inspired by a viral fan animation, the fan animation trend went viral in early 2017, with many videos later appearing in cringe compilations.

Origin

Spread

The video inspired a fan animation trend as multiple animations copying the dance from scotch's video and set to the song were posted in early January 2017. For example, on January 12th, 2017, animator Doopie Doodles posted[3] an animation of D.Va from Overwatch that gained over 2.1 million views in six years (shown below, left). On January 19th, 2017, animator Snowy Seal uploaded[4] a video of Sans from Undertale that gained over 754,200 views in the same period (shown below, right).

Due to the poor quality of many animations, many of them were later set to private or deleted by their authors, with some ending up in cringe compilations. For example, on January 23rd, 2017, YouTube[5] channel Animation Meme Cringe Comps posted one such compilation that received over 111,000 views in six years (shown below, left).

The song saw limited use in later years: for example, on October 27th, 2018, animator MakiCute posted[6] a Bowsette animation that received over 2.8 million views (shown below, right).
