About

Gugugaga Penguin (Chinese: 咕咕嘎嘎企鹅), also commonly written as Gugu Gaga Penguin and referred to within the Arknights: Endfield community as Endmin Penguin or Penguinistrator, is a chibi AI-generated character derived from the Endministrator player avatar in the action role-playing game Arknights: Endfield. The meme consists of short AI-generated videos depicting a small penguin-styled version of the character performing childlike everyday actions--drinking milk, waddling, chasing butterflies, getting pouty when poked--paired with looping baby-talk "gugu gaga" vocalizations. The format originated on Bilibili in February 2026 and spread to Douyin, TikTok, and X over the following weeks.

Origin

The Gugugaga Penguin meme is the product of a multi-step origin chain that began before Arknights: Endfield launched. The "gugu gaga" baby-talk audio originated from Takamatsu Tomori (高松灯), a vocalist character in the 2023 anime BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! [1], whose speech contains baby-syllable vocal tics. AI-edit compilations of her speaking these syllables circulated on Bilibili by late 2024, and the format was popularized in its definitive remixed form by Bilibili creator 涂山白白喵 (Tushan Baibaimiao), who bound the audio cluster to a recognizable visual character.

Arknights: Endfield, a 3D action role-playing game developed by Hypergryph [2] and published by Gryphline, launched globally on January 22, 2026 [3] as a successor to the studio's mobile tower defense title Arknights. The game's player avatar, the Endministrator (community shorthand "Endmin"), is designed with a long black coat featuring white inner lining and bright yellow shoulder accents. Overseas players on X had already begun describing the design as "penguin-coded" during the December 2025 Endfield Beta Test II.

The canonical AI penguin form was created by Bilibili user 贱兔死顺盖 (Jiàntù Sǐshùngài) [4], who on February 19, 2026 posted a video titled 《没什么,只是想让你知道这只企鹅的出处》 ("Nothing much, I just want you to know where this penguin came from"). The video presented an AI-generated chibi image of the Endministrator in a penguin costume, with the creator explicitly stating the image was "100% AI-generated" and declaring it free for community AI-video derivative use. This declaration removed friction for downstream creators, and the format propagated rapidly across Bilibili and Douyin when paired with the pre-existing Takamatsu Tomori "gugu gaga" audio.

Spread

Through late February and March 2026, the chibi penguin format spread explosively across Chinese-language short-video platforms. According to data compiled by Chinese industry tracker 新榜 (Newrank), a single 30-day window saw more than 5,950 new derivative videos and over 1.5 billion total plays on Douyin alone [5]. On Bilibili, at least three separate videos cleared six million plays each within two weeks of the format's breakout.

The trend reached international platforms in late February and March 2026, appearing on TikTok [6] under hashtags including #gugugaga, #endmin, #penguinistrator, and #arknightsendfield. On X (formerly Twitter), the English-language ignition is generally attributed to user @endminguy, whose January 30, 2026 post titled "The so called Penguinistrator is real!?" was widely circulated within Arknights and gacha-game fan communities.

English-language community discussion concentrated on Reddit, primarily in the r/Endfield [7] subreddit, where members coined the term Penguinistrator to informally distinguish the chibi penguin form from the canonical Endministrator design. A widely-upvoted r/Endfield thread tagged Fluff/Meme jokingly declared the two characters "separate entities," a framing that became community canon.

Derivative formats emerged across multiple gaming and modding platforms. A Palworld replacement mod [8] swapping the in-game Pengullet for a Gugu Gaga model was published on Nexus Mods in March 2026. Minecraft skin packs and Roblox experiences themed around the character also appeared, including a Roblox "I'M GUGUGAGA PENGUIN" YouTube video that crossed 1.19 million views by April 2026. By that point, fan-made merchandise--plushies, acrylic keychains, and resin statue lines--had appeared on Etsy, eBay, and independent storefronts, with the GUGA Studio statue series listed at 1/1 (approximately 51cm) and 1/4 scale. The franchise's official channels later incorporated a small penguin bandage element into Arknights: Endfield's main storyline, an oblique acknowledgment of the meme.

Notables

The most prolific downstream Bilibili creators produced multiple top-charting Gugugaga Penguin videos through early 2026:

  • 徐Toso -- produced the highest-charting Gugugaga video series, with a single video reaching approximately 10.35 million plays and entering Bilibili's top-5 overall chart [9].
  • 圆蛤菌 -- re-creation creator whose top Gugugaga video accumulated approximately 7.06 million plays.
  • 嘎嘎咕嘎小企鹅 -- single-video peak of approximately 5.24 million plays.
  • 清水煮油条 -- "管理员护食" ("Endmin Guards Her Food") video reaching approximately 3.15 million plays.
  • AF小钢 -- "咕咕嘎嘎跳舞" ("Gugu Gaga Dancing") video reaching approximately 1.31 million plays.
  • 长安咕嘎 -- produced a 9-episode "海猫与咕嘎" ("Seagull and Guga") series on Douyin, with the "滑雪日" ("Skiing Day") episode receiving over 120,000 likes.
  • 墨小心 -- "功夫企鹅" ("Kung Fu Penguin") video paying tribute to Kung Fu Panda in a Gugugaga setting.

On Douyin, a dedicated account 性感小企鹅 ("Sexy Little Penguin") focused exclusively on Gugugaga content, with a peak video receiving over 320,000 likes. By April 2026, the meme had reportedly overtaken earlier Chinese game-derivative IPs including Doro and Takamatsu Tomori herself in cross-platform engagement metrics.

Controversies

In early March 2026, original creator 贱兔死顺盖 attempted to register copyright on the AI-generated penguin image and reportedly began demanding revenue shares from merchants producing physical merchandise based on it [10]. This reversed their earlier February 19, 2026 declaration that the image was free for community use. When negotiations with one merchant broke down and that merchant commissioned a redrawn version to avoid licensing, the creator posted a public denouncement video, triggering widespread backlash across Bilibili, Weibo, and Zhihu.

Critics argued that (1) the image is itself an unlicensed fan derivative of an Arknights: Endfield character owned by Hypergryph, (2) the underlying "gugu gaga" audio originated from a separate character, Takamatsu Tomori, predating the AI image, and (3) the wider meme is a product of collective community creation rather than individual authorship. The dispute became a focal point of Chinese discourse on AI-generated content authorship and the boundaries of "derivative-of-derivative" claims.

Coverage appeared in major Chinese gaming and tech media including 3DM, 17173, 游民星空 (GamerSky), 搜狐, and 新浪 [11]. On March 7, 2026, the creator issued a public apology, withdrew all copyright claims, and renounced monetization on the format--a sequence Chinese internet vernacular described as 滑跪 ("knee-slide apology"). The episode is widely cited as a landmark case in Chinese AI-content copyright discussion.
