About

Hip Cleavage is a style trend based around the exposure of a woman's hips and the area of a woman's body between the thigh and the hip.

Origin

The earliest known usage of the term "Hip Cleavage" was posted on July 23rd, 2013 when the /r/HipCleavage[1] subreddit launched. The subreddit, which shows images of Hip Cleavage, describes the subreddit:

"Hip cleavage? You know that crease where the top of the thigh meets a woman's hip? In human anatomy, this particular area is referred to as the inguinal area. Well, hip cleavage sounds much better, and there really isn't another name for it erotically."

Spread

On September 19th, 2015, the Instagram [2] account @hipcleavage published their first post of a woman wearing a leather corset and fishnet stockings. The post (shown below) received more than 65 likes.

On March 28th, 2017, the website Popsugar[3] published an article "Bella Hadid's Hip Cleavage Is the New Thighbrow." They wrote, "Bella Hadid's got a new trick she's been employing, slipping into high-leg bodysuits and tugging her track pants down below her hip bone to create a makeshift cutout."

The following month, on April 25th, NBC's Today[4] published an article about Bella Hadid's hip cleavage. They wrote, "Celebrities are making hip cleavage a thing, and we're not exactly sure how to feel about it. What is hip cleavage, you ask? Essentially, instead of showing off the bust above, celebs are showing off the hip bone and below as the sexy new style statement."

On May 18th, 2018, The Daily Dot [5] published an article criticizing the trend. They wrote:

"The fact of the matter is that hip cleavage is a non-thing that, as a result of fashion’s return to high-wasted one-pieces reminiscent of Pamela Anderson on Baywatch and athleisure wear worn on Saved By the Bell and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has unfortunately become a thing. Once again, we’re fawning over another could-be-fun but honestly dumb beauty standard that pretends to promote “body positivity” by showing off a woman’s hips, or something."

Several media outlets reported on he trend, including Page Six,[6] The Sun,[7] The Guardian[8] and more.
