About

I Am The Storm That Is Approaching is a line from the song "Bury the Light," which is used as Vergil's theme in the video game Devil May Cry 5 that was released in 2019. The song itself, much like "Pull My Devil Trigger" has been used as replacement audio in other memes and remixes, often with characters photoshopped into DMC5 gameplay with the song playing in the background.

Origin

The song was first released after the special edition trailer of Devil May Cry V, in which Vergil became a playable character, was published on the official Devil May Cry YouTube[5] channel on September 16th, 2020. In the trailer, "Bury the Light" begins playing around the 25-second mark when the title for the game appears on screen (seen below).

On September 17th, 2020, the YouTube channel Tomokose[1] uploaded the first meme in which Romeo Cannady's Y'all Mind If I Praise The Lord was inserted into the gameplay trailer for Vergil, with the song playing in the background, earning over 2 million views in two years (shown below).

Spread

After the trailer was released, the full song was uploaded in its entirety on September 20th, 2020, with it being posted on the official DevilHunter music YouTube[2] channel that day. This allowed the song audio to be more readily available for others to use in memes while the original upload quickly accumulated over 50 million views in two years (shown below).

As the meme continued to spread, the line that most creators took from the song was the bridge "I Am The Storm That Is Approaching" and the part that followed, using that in the majority of memes since the theme's release. For example, on October 27th, 2020, that part of the song's audio was overlaid on top of footage of a storm chaser attempting to get out of his car in the middle of a storm, uploaded by the YouTube[3] channel Jordan, which gained over 1 million views in two years (shown below).

The audio format continued to see use whenever a new music-related meme came out in the following years, as seen with the Max's Favorite Song trend from Stranger Things in mid-2022, which spawned an I Am The Storm That Is Approaching edit uploaded to YouTube on July 5th, 2022, by the channel GigaCheddar[4] (shown below). Over the course of two weeks, the video received over 467,000 views and 34,000 likes.
