Devil May Cry
About
Devil May Cry is a fighting-adventure video game series developed by Capcom and created by Hideki Kamiyama.[1] The series primarily focuses on Dante, a superhuman vigilante with the goal of exterminating demons to avenge his mother's death. The series is loosely based on Dante's Divine Comedy, with several characters' names based off characters in the play. As of March 14th, 2019, there have been six core games in the series, with the latest being Devil May Cry 5.
History
The original game, created by Hideki Kamiya, was initially intended to be a sequel of Resident Evil 2, but the heavy action focus of the game caused Kamiya to rewrite the story and change the premise. Thus, the first Devil May Cry, released August 23rd, 2001 for the Playstation, bears many cosmetic similarities to the first two Resident Evil games.[10] The games encourage players to try and rack up combos and style points, thus allow for infinite ammunition. Each game is notable for the "Devil Trigger" ability, in which Dante is able to briefly transform into a more powerful version of himself based on what weapon he is using. The six core games in the series are Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 3 (a prequel to the series), Devil May Cry 4, DmC: Devil May Cry, and Devil May Cry 5.
Devil May Cry 5
On June 10th, 2018, Capcom announced Devil May Cry 5 with a cinematic trailer (shown below). Devil May Cry 5 takes place five years after the events of Devil May Cry 4. It runs on the Resident Evil engine first used in Resident Evil VII, leading to a "photo-realistic" style.
Devil May Cry 5 was released on March 8th, 2019 to favorable reviews, gaining a score of 87 on Metacritic.[12] Critics praised the game's look and fluid gameplay, with some going as far to call it one of the best action games ever. The games feature a hack-and-slash style of gameplay, with the player challenged to string together impressive combos with a combination of guns and swords.
Reception
Most Devil May Cry games have been critical and commercial successes, with the exception of Devil May Cry 2, which received mixed reviews for its easy gameplay. Nevertheless, it sold over a million copies, as has every Devil May Cry game to date (with the exception of the recently-released Devil May Cry 5). On Metacritic,[11] most games received green "favorable" scores, with the exception of Devil May Cry 2 (68).
Online Presence
Devil May Cry has generated a passionate fanbase which has survived through the series' nearly two decades of existence. This has resulted in fan art communities on Tumblr[2], deviantART[3] and pixiv.[4] The Facebook page for Devil May Cry has over 1.8 million likes.[5] The Twitter page has over 32,000 followers.[6] A Devil May Cry Wiki also exists, having over 612 pages about the games, characters, items, weapons, locations and music.[7] The game's subreddit has over 34,000 subscribers.[13]

Featuring Dante From The Devil May Cry Series
Featuring Dante From The Devil May Cry Series is an exploitable meme of a seal placed on the cover of the European release of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne[8], titled as Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer’s Call, to promote the addition of Dante. The addition of the seal on the European release, which wasn’t present on the releases of the game elsewhere, became a target of mock by the gaming community due to Dante’s rather trivial part in the game’s plot.
Ur a Faget
Ur a Faget, a bastardized form of "You're a Faggot", is a highly common insult used online towards another poster's belief or behavior. The phrase first became popular on 4chan when it was used in a MS Paint comic featuring the main characters from Devil May Cry 3 in 2007.

DmC Dante / Donte
DmC Dante, also nicknamed as Donte, is the name given by the Devil May Cry fanbase to the version of Dante seen in the 2013 reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry.[9] This character is notable for its vulgar and aggressive personality, that differs greatly from the original Dante’s more calm and cocky attitude.
Pull My Devil Trigger
Pull My Devil Trigger refers to a lyric from the song "Nero's Theme," which played during the announcement trailer for Devil May Cry 5 at E3 2018. After the trailer, the Devil May Cry fandom made jokes and videos about the lyric.
