I Did My Besht!

About

I Did My Besht! refers to a panel from the Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai manga series in which the titular character Jahywhen feels depressed after working hard to find the demon stone only to have it stolen. The panel of her starting to cry became a popular reaction image and redraw reference.

Origin

On October 22nd, 2018, volume 3 of Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai! was released in Japan^[1]. In chapter 18, Jahy is drinking in the shop she works for after the demon red stone she found to restore the demon world was stolen by someone else, known as the Magical Girl (English version shown below).

Spread

The page later gained popularity as a reaction image after social media found users found it relatable. For example on August 13th, 2018, Reddit^[2] user F4LL3NBaller uploaded the page of it to the /r/anime_irl subreddit. The post received more than 7,200 upvotes in six years.

It also became popular with various edits and redraws. For example, on February 2nd, 2021, Reddit^[3] user vizard673 uploaded
a redraw of the panel featuring KonoSuba character Aqua to the /r/Konosuba subreddit. The post received more than 2,900 upvotes in three years (shown below, left). On June 4th, 2021, Reddit^[4] user DanielGREY_75 uploaded an edit depicting the Genshin Impact character Xinyan to the /r/Genshin_Memepact subreddit. The post received more than 4,300 upvotes in three years (shown below, right).

On March 22nd, 2022, Pixiv^[5] user AcrylicStroke uploaded a redraw with a Genshin Impact character named Eula. The image received more than 12,000 likes and 66,000 views in two years (shown below, left). On March 2nd, 2023, Reddit^[6] user HeiPin uploaded a redraw of another Genshin Impact character, Deyha, to the /r/Genshin_Impact subreddit. The post received more than 14,000 upvotes in one year (shown below, right).
