I Hate Vietnam is a memorable quote spoken by Lily in season four episode 19 of Modern Family, in which Cam and Mitch take their adopted daughter Lily to a Vietnamese restaurant and she says "I hate Vietnam" twice to the waitress. The episode aired in 2013 and was reposted to TikTok in May 2023. In January 2025, the scene's audio became the subject of lip dub memes as a way of expressing your distaste for something, often for an irrational reason.

Origin

On April 3rd, 2013, season four episode 19 of Modern Family aired on TV. During the episode, Mitch and Cam take their adopted daughter Lily to a Vietnamese restaurant to show her what her culture's food is like. She complains that she'd rather eat a cheeseburger and says, "I hate Vietnam" twice.^[1]

On May 5th, 2023, TikToker^[2] @movieshell reposted the scene, garnering over 3 million views in eight months. In January 2025, the upload's original sound became the subject of lip dub memes, although it is unclear who posted the first meme to the sound. The earliest known example was posted by TikToker^[3] @jadendepasquale on January 17th, 2025, garnering over 1.4 million views in two weeks.

The audio became increasingly popular throughout January 2025. On January 24th, 2025, TikToker^[4] @ben.duong posted a version of the meme that gained over 24 million views in a week.

On January 27th, the actress who played Lily, Aubrey-Anderson Emmons, posted a video to TikTok^[5] using the sound, garnering over 21 million views in three days.
