If You Like X, You Should Try Y, also known as Gaming Recommendation, refers to a meme format in which a recommendation to try out a certain thing, often humorous or extreme, is given to fans of a particular video game or video game genre. Originally based on a TikTok in which Bloodborne fans are given a recommendation to try out therapy, the format circulated widely on Twitter and Reddit in late November 2021.

Origin

On November 19th, 2021, TikTok^[1] user @notebookpapr posted a humorous video in which she provided a "gaming recommendation" for those who like the action RPG Bloodborne, advising them to try out therapy. The video received over 561,000 views and 76,600 likes in ten days (shown below, left).

On November 20th, 2021, Twitter^[2] user @Leodgrad reposted a still image from the video to Twitter, where it gained over 4,400 retweets and 43,300 likes in nine days (shown below, right).

On November 21st, 2021, Twitter^[3] user @DrakeBlight posted the earliest found edit of the image, containing a remixed caption. The post received over 800 retweets and 8,700 likes (shown below, left).

Starting on the same day, users on Twitter posted edited captions of the image, replacing both the base game and the provided recommendation. For example, on November 22nd, 2021, Twitter^[4] user @KAINENlER posted a meme that gained over 3,600 retweets and 23,500 likes in one week (shown below, center). On November 23rd and 24th, a version of the joke about grand strategy and RTS games and estrogen posted by Redditor linguafreda achieved popularity on Reddit^[5][6] and Facebook^[7] (shown below, right).

The format maintained popularity in the following days, with notable examples appearing on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, iFunny, Tumblr and other sites.
