IJBOL is an acronym that stands for the phrase "I Just Burst Out Laughing." The internet slang term is used in a manner similar to LOL and is typically used to indicate that one was pushed towards laughter despite an attempt at restraint. The use of the phrase on the internet can be traced as far back as 2009 despite becoming more prevalent in the 2020s.

Origin

Some of the earliest uses of the acronym "IJBOL" can be traced back to July 23rd, 2009, when Twitter^[1][2] users @RockStarHustle and @CUNTRY tweeted at each other using the phrase (seen below).

In 2009, two Urban Dictionary users defined the term "IJBOL" as well, with one saying that it meant "I Just Busted Out Laughing" and another saying that it meant "I Just Burst Out Laughing."

Spread

Use of the slang term continued on the internet in subsequent years, with the first viral tweet using the term being posted on August 23rd, 2021, by Twitter^[3] user @i30clip, and gathering over 50,000 likes in two years (seen below, left). Another viral tweet using the acronym was posted on April 18th, 2022, by @civiIswar,^[4] gathering over 35,000 likes in a year (seen below, right).

On July 31st, 2023, Twitter^[5] user @mazzypopstar posted a screenshot of a tweet that read, "What does ijbol mean, is it Muslim or something I keep seeing it." The post gathered over 45,000 likes in a day (seen below).

On July 1st, 2023, TikToker^[6] @namjoonsiphone posted a video captioned, "Me eating alphabet soup and I eat the word "ijbol," gathering over 13,000 plays and 600 likes in a month (seen below, left). On July 8th, TikToker^[7] @03missexoie03 posted a video about how they thought "ijbol" was a Korean word due to its usage on K-Pop Stan Twitter, gathering over 20,000 plays and 1,600 likes in three weeks (seen below, right).
