About
Insidious Lipstick-Face Demon refers to a series of image macro parodies of a still from the 2011 horror film Insidious in which the antagonist known as the "Lipstick-Face Demon"[7] appears behind the film's protagonist, Josh Lambert. The image was initially used in image macro memes about the film in the early 2010s before seeing a resurgence in object labeling memes in late 2019.
Origin
In the trailer for the 2011 horror film Insidious, the film's demon briefly appears behind the film's protagonist, Josh Lambert. On October 15th, 2013, YouTube channel Movieclips Classic Trailers uploaded the trailer, gaining over 6.2 million views (shown below).
Spread
The image began seeing use in image macros in the early 2010s shortly after the film debuted. For example, on September 15th, 2013, Memedroid[1] user sisterfister posted an image macro of the still that lamented that the moment was spoiled in the trailer (shown below, left). On May 3rd, 2012, an image macro comparing the demon to Darth Maul and Animal from The Muppets appeared on Memecenter[2] (shown below, right).
The format went dormant for several years before reappearing in late 2019 as an object labeling meme. For example, an object labeling meme in which Josh Lambert is labeled "me trying to enjoy a peaceful cup of coffee in the morning" and the demon is labeled "poop" was posted on several subreddits in November of 2019 (shown below, left).[3][4][5] On November 24th, iFunny[6] user DarthBoner made a Black Friday joke with the template, gaining over 120 likes (shown below, right).
