Is This Some Sort of Peasant Joke? refers to a screenshot from the British television show Horrible Histories that saw use as a reaction image in early 2019 as a way to express superiority.
Origin
The screenshot (shown below) comes from Series 3, Episode 12 of Horrible Histories, which aired November 17th, 2011.[1]
Spread
The image saw sparing use as a reaction image in the mid-2010s. One of the first instances it was used appeared on Imgur[2] on February 25th, 2016 as a way to mock Donald Trump (shown below, left). On May 12th, 2018, Redditor King_Abdul made a post on /r/StarWarsBattlefront[3] mocking EA using the screenshot, gaining over 2,100 points (shown below, right).
The screenshot began growing more popular on Reddit starting in early 2019. On January 29th, Redditor Creepybeagle[4] posted a joke mocking Facebook to /r/memes, gaining over 16,000 points (shown below, left). On February 3rd, Redditor cakeluvr6969 posted a template to /r/MemeEconomy,[5] where it gained over 1,100 points (shown below, right).
