About

Japanese Goblin refers to a Touhou Project song off the doujinshi album Gensoukyou Misogibarai by Astral Trip, in which the character Suika Ibuki is singing dancing. In 2022, the song gained prominence in video remixes on YouTube and Facebook.

Origin

On August 15th, 2009, Astral Trip released a doujinshi album of Touhou Project titled Gensoukyou Misogibarai at Comiket 76. On December 31st, 2010, Nico Nico Douga[1] user 吉都 蒼太(裸足D uploaded a music video titled "【東方3DPV風】砕月 (ココ&さつき が てんこもり's 作業妨害Remix)", in which the character Suika Ibuki sings and dances. The video received more than 1 million views in 13 years. On June 24th, 2011, YouTuber[2] atomicpuppy uploaded the video with subtitles, titled "WE ARE JAPANESE GOBLIN." The video received more than 1.4 million views in 11 years (shown below).



Spread

The music video received many parodies over the following decade on YouTube. For example, on April 12th, 2017, YouTube[3] user 쬬Ji 쬬star uploaded a video titled "Japanese goblin gone filthy", adding Filthy Frank. The video received 32,000 views in 5 years (shown below, left). On July 31st, 2020, YouTube[4] user Cakewalking Tortokhod uploaded a Carson Shearer's Dance edit titled "Japanese Goblin but it's car.shearer". The video received 41,000 views in 2 years (shown below, right).



In 2022, the song gained popularity on Facebook, mostly in the "LowRes MKUltra" group. For example, on March 11th, 2022, Facebook[5] user Gian Kyle uploaded a video mashup of the song and "HUMBLE" by Kendrick Lamar. The video received more than 1,700 reactions and 1,600 shares in 4 days (shown below, left). On the next day, Facebook[6] user Danny Putra Darma uploaded a video of a kitten with the caption "stop it I am not | not a Japanese goblin". The video received more than 3,500 reactions and 2,300 shares (shown below, right).
