History

Jeremias (pronounced Jay-ray-mee-yas), or Jeremias José do Nascimento is a resident in Salgado district, in the city of Caruaru (State of Pernambuco), Brazil. He was made an instant internet celebrity, as his interview on the sensationalist TV show "Sem Meias Palavras" was uploaded to YouTube, circa 2005.

"Sem Meias Palavras" (something like "No half-words", in the sense that the show depicts scandalous stories integrally) is a tv show broadcasted in northeastern Brazil. The show focuses on interviewing people in moments of shame, such as public drunkeness and familiar conflicts, interviews often taking place in police stations.

Jeremias was detained for driving a small motorcycle while being really drunk, and being a "danger to himself and to others", as stated by the officer in the video. But it was the sequence of responses to Givanildo Silva's (the reporter) questions that made him famous:

with English Subtitles:

Jeremias keeps saying that his mother is going to arrive soon, that who poured him drinks was the devil, and that smart-ass people should die. Also, one of his statements is that he could "kill a thousand", and "would kill even the sheriff, if he's abusive". Near the end of the video, the reporter induces Jeremias to sing a popular brazilian country song, "Sem você não viverei" ("can't live without you") by singer Ovelha.

After the first video spread, the show started stalking Jeremias, hoping to bust him in another embarrasing moment, boosting the ratings and the show's notability.

Interview 2 (this time he was not under arrest):

Interview 3 (this time he was detained, for drunken-horseriding and threatening to trample people with it):

Development

Many spoofs and variations were made including a funk carioca version of the song, and a "Like a G6" crossover:

Further on

Recently, Jeremias sued Google[1] and other companies by undue exposure of his image. A new video has been made of him, in which he shows no interest in drinking anymore. He is shown working alongside his mother (the same he claimed would laugh at the arrest):

Also, fans from many different regions of Brazil travelled to Caruaru just to meet with the phenomenon, situation from which Jeremias managed to make a buck:
