About
Jewish Space Laser refers to a conspiracy theory about an in-orbit space laser possibly created by Rothschild Inc. that is allegedly responsible for the California Wildfires. The theory was notably purported by Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene in a 2018 Facebook post.
Origin
On November 17th, 2018, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene made a post to her Facebook page speculating that the California wildfires were started by a laser put into orbit by Solaren Corp. and Rothschild Inc. in order to protect the gas and energy company PG&E (shown below).
The post was uncovered and brought into the limelight in January 2021, notably by Eric Hananoki on Twitter,[1] along with a history of other posts from Greene supporting various conspiracy theories, including some supported by QAnon, after she was chosen for a role in the education committee.[2]
Spread
Greene's post received widespread media attention[3][4] with many outlets making specific mention of the space laser. The claim inspired mockery online (example shown below).[5]
On January 28th, actor Patton Oswalt tweeted,[6] "Shit I’m gonna be muttering, “Jewish Space Laser” to the tune of “Paperback Writer” all weekend." garnering over 28,500 likes and 2,200 retweets in a day (shown below). On that day, "Jewish Space Laser" went trending on Twitter in the United States.
As the story spread, more Twitter users began making jokes about the Jewish space laser. On the same day as Oswalt's tweet, @lennyleia99 tweeted,[9] "This is my favorite Jewish space laser" along with an image of Superman using his laser vision, garnering over 850 likes in a day (shown below, left).
Twitter user @FiredmanGrace tweeted,[7] "May I present to you: the Jewish Space Laser" along with a Bernie Sanders Wearing Mittens Sitting In a Chair meme, garnering over 3,900 likes and 700 retweets in a day (shown below, right).
On January 29th, @jenbanim tweeted, "What I picture every time I read the phrase 'Jewish space laser'"[8] followed by an image of the Death Star from Star Wars mixed with a Star of David, garnering over 260 likes in under a day (shown below, left).
On the same day, activist Marianne Williamson tweeted,[10] "THIS is a Jewish space laser. Don’t f…k with me, @mtgreenee" and a photoshop of herself as a Jedi, garnering over 12,000 likes and 1,800 retweets in 10 hours (shown below, right)..
