About
Kagura Bachi Glazing refers to a series of memes that excessively praise (also known as "glazing") Kagura Bachi, a shonen manga series published in Weekly Shone Jump. The trend, which began in September 2023 before the first chapter of the manga was released, involves users overhyping the manga as one of the greatest of all time, worthy of being included in "The Big Three" series together with One Piece, Naruto and Bleach, with the posts often being accompanied by the image of the main character Chihiro unsheathing a katana.
Origin
On September 10th, 2023, a color preview of the upcoming shonen manga series Kagura Bachi, a panel of main character Chihiro unsheathing a katana, was revealed.
On September 13th, an X[1] user made a Greater Than post stating that Kagura Bachi is a greater manga than Boruto, with the tweet gaining over 50 retweets and 180 likes in one week (shown below). Later that day, Redditor[2] ForsenBruh posted a screenshot of the post in the /r/Kagurabachi subreddit, where it received over 560 upvotes in two weeks.
Spread
In the following days, multiple posts presenting Kagura Bachi as one of the greatest manga series of all time went viral on Twitter / X, and later on TikTok and Reddit. For example, on September 17th, 2023, Twitter / X[3] user @yousorohno posted a joke that received over 400 reposts and 2,000 likes in two days (shown below, left). On September 17th, Redditor[4] oarakonSeven posted a Greater Than meme that received over 2,600 upvotes in the /r/okbuddybaka subreddit in two days (shown below, right).
Starting in mid-September 2023, the trend achieved massive popularity on X and TikTok. For example, on September 19th, TikToker[5] tinohanma posted a video that received over 289,000 views and 54,100 likes in two days. Also on September 19th, TikToker[6] @yo.ruichiv2 uploaded a Photo Slideshow about who is the real three sword style user. The post (shown below) garnered over 1.1 million views in two days.
The format maintained significant virality in the following days, with the glazing trend being compared to the ironic popularity of the superhero film Morbius in 2022. This included posts spreading misinformation that a Kagura Bachi anime adaptation was already in the works at a major studio.
