Laineyball

About

Laineyball is an exploitable meme character from 4chan based on illustrator Lainey Molnar, who creates her own webcomic series using stylized versions of humans as part of a social commentary. The image is a Polandball variant, which was originally posted with Russian flag colors in a post where it was sodomizing a Ukrainian-flag ball in reference to the 2022 conflict, that was edited to have a flesh-colored tone and the face from one of Molnar's comics. The intention of Laineyball by 4chan users is to proliferate to the point where it overshadows the original comic and annoys the author. This comes from rumors and posts on 4chan in which it is believed that Lainey herself has been linked to 4chan and saw the memes made about her, causing her distress.^[7]

Origin

Various edits of Lainey Molnar's webcomic series occurred on 4chan prior to the creation of the Lanieyball character, typically inciting posters to declare "Laineytoss" as a reference^[6] to the political comic creator Stonetoss, whose work is also edited frequently on 4chan and across the internet to corrupt the original intent of the message. The original post that spawned Laineyball came to 4chan's /pol/ board on April 14th, 2022. The thread, titled /LBG/ or "LaineyBall General," featured a large assortment of the meme ball being edited into several other memes and pop culture references, with the first one^[1] being King Kong (shown below).

The face used in Laineyball originally comes from an earlier comic of Molnar's about women being told to smile, suggesting that they should make an aggressive smiling face back to show how uncomfortable it is. This image was notably used on 4chan as a reaction image and part of "Laineyposting" in general for over a year. One such example with the meme appeared in a greentext that was submitted to Reddit on July 5th, 2021, by Redditor^[5] siphonmydick (shown below).

Spread

After the initial post and thread of the character, Laineyball was later altered in the following days to remove the penis and replace it with an exaggeratedly long female genitalia. An example^[2] of this variant (shown below) was then posted in the thread next to another Laineyball edit that featured a prolapsed anus.^[3]

Over the next few days, further variations of Laineyball in memes appeared on 4chan, with them being edited into Molnar's actual comics as an attempt to mock her works in a way considered more offensive than simply editing word choices as previously seen. An example of this was posted on April 18th, 2022, that shows her comic's message replaced with the edited Laineyball^[4] intending to detract from the original meaning (shown below).
