Laughing Stock refers to an exploitable image featuring three panels, the first two representing either soup stocks or gun stocks, and the third, called "Laughing Stock," shows a target of mockery.
Origin
One of the earliest known posts to use the template appeared on Flickr on December 25th, 2008, making fun of the Chelsea football team (shown below).
Spread
Early iterations of the meme spread with references to english culture like their Premier League football teams or their Rugby teams. For example, a joke about England's Rugby team appeared in the Huffington Post on April 10th, 2015.[2] Twitter on September 2nd, 2012 in a post by @redleaflet,[1] making fun of a far-right English activist group (shown below).
A version of the template using gun stocks began growing popular in November of 2018. On November 19th, Redditor dankbob_memepants_ made such a post in /r/MemeEconomy, gaining over 22,000 points (shown below, left). Another post on November 18th on /r/dankmemes gained over 19,000 points (shown below, right).
