Overview
Epstein Files, also known as Ghislaine Maxwell Unsealed Documents, refers to a cache of documents that were unsealed in late July 2020 during the U.S. v. Ghislaine Maxwell trial. The documents that were released by the court stem from a 2015 civil action against Jeffrey Epstein and Maxwell by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed that Maxwell played a key role in the luring and training of underage girls as sex slaves. Personal emails between Maxwell, Epstein and discussions between Giuffre and her lawyer, as well as other testimonies from alleged victims, are included in the files.
Since being released, the documents have been widely circulated on the internet, sparking discussion on several sites and social media platforms. In late February 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice started to release all the files related to the case, sparking more debate about the topic, as well as memes regarding the lack of new information being revealed, as most of the content in the files had already been discussed or leaked.
In late January 2026, the Department of Justice (DOJ) released another batch of roughly 3.5 million pages of documents as part of the "Epstein Files Transparency Act." The newly released documents quickly garnered significant media attention and spread online via discussion posts, memes and other reactions in early 2026.
Background
On July 23rd, 2020, U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ordered the unsealing and release of the documents in a Manhattan federal court during United States v. Ghislaine Maxwell,[1] saying, “the court finds that the countervailing interests identified fail to rebut the presumption of public access,” and that Maxwell’s push to keep them sealed did not outweigh the public’s right to see them.
On July 30th, more than 80 documents were unsealed and released to the public, including police reports from Palm Beach, Florida (where Epstein had a home), flight logs from Epstein’s private jets, emails between Maxwell and Epstein, discussions between Giuffre, her lawyer and the FBI, as well as testimonies from other alleged victims.[2]
Developments
Upon release, numerous media outlets reported on the unsealed files, including Reuters,[3] CNN,[4] The Guardian[5] and Fox News,[6] as well as many others. The news also quickly reached Twitter’s[7] trending section on July 30th (shown below) alongside the use of "#EpsteinFiles."
February 2025 Epstein Files Release
On February 27th, 2025, Attorney General Pamela Bondi,[15] in conjunction with the FBI, declassified and publicly released the first phase of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his sexual exploitation of over 250 underage girls at his homes in New York and Florida, among other locations. The U.S. Department of Justice[16] also tweeted a press release regarding the file's release (seen below), which amassed over 1 million views and 10,000 likes in a day.
According to The Washington Post[17], the files "acknowledged much of it had already made its way into the public domain," showing flight logs from Epstein’s private plane and transcripts from victim interviews, which "had previously been made public in Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell’s 2021 trial."
The lack of substantial new information and black bars censoring most of the data in the Epstein files sparked memes and jokes on social media, as X[18] user @RepSwalwell posted on February 27th, 2025, an image of a file completely filled with censor bars, writing, "You were promised the full Epstein files. You got this." The tweet amassed more than 2 million views and 75,000 likes in a day.
On the same day, Redditor[19] u/Legitimate-Lie-9208 posted a picture of people walking out of the White House with binders bearing the seal of the U.S. Justice Department reading “The Epstein Files: Phase 1." The post (seen below) amassed over 20,000 upvotes and 2,300 comments in a day.
January 2026 Epstein Files Release
On January 30th, 2026, the Department of Justice (DOJ) published around 3.5 million pages from the Epstein Files as part of the "Epstein Files Transparency Act." According to the DOJ[20] website's post about the release, the files also included "more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images" in addition to emails and other documents. The files can be searched through and viewed by the public via the "Epstein Library" archives hosted on the DOJ[21] site.
Additionally, the release noted that some redactions were made "to the protection of victims and their families," as well as explicit images. The DOJ post also notably states:
This production may include fake or falsely submitted images, documents or videos, as everything that was sent to the FBI by the public was included in the production that is responsive to the Act. Some of the documents contain untrue and sensationalist claims against President Trump that were submitted to the FBI right before the 2020 election. To be clear, the claims are unfounded and false, and if they have a shred of credibility, they certainly would have been weaponized against President Trump already.
The Epstein Files release quickly garnered widespread news coverage, including reports from outlets like CNN[22] that same day, which noted that the documents contained references to "President Donald Trump and other powerful figures, including Elon Musk, Bill Clinton and a former Obama White House counsel."
On January 31st, 2026, President Donald Trump responded to the newly released files that mentioned him, stating, "I was told by some very important people that not only does it absolve me, it’s the opposite of what people were hoping, you know, the radical left."
Zohran Mamdani In Epstein Files AI Controversy
Following the release of additional documents in late January 2026, numerous accounts on platforms like X / Twitter began spreading AI-generated images depicting NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a baby or child with his mother, Mira Nair, posing with Jeffrey Epstein. Nair, however, was merely mentioned in the newly released files about the 2009 film Amelia that she directed.[29]
For example, on January 31st, 2026, X[31] user celestialxsigh tweeted an image depicting Mira Nair holding a baby they claimed was Zohran Mamdani next to Bill Clinton and Epstein, garnering over 3,400 views and 20 likes in four days. The tweet was notably given a Community Note, pointing out that the photo is fake and AI-generated.
On February 1st, X[32] user albuffalo2nite tweeted another image depicting Epstein, Maxwell, Clinton, Gates and Bezos posing with Nair and Mamdani, receiving over 506,000 views, 8,200 likes and 700 replies. The tweet was also given a Community Note stating that the image was AI-generated and not real.
The tweet was then reposted to the /r/GetNoted[33] subreddit on February 2nd, garnering over 5,000 upvotes and 280 comments in two days.
Another example of the AI-generated image picturing a young Mamdani and his mom with Epstein was shared to the /r/WeirdGOP[34] subreddit on February 1st, 2026, garnering over 650 upvotes and 180 comments in three days.
Also on February 1st, 2026, Redditor Gaba8789 posted an exchange from Twitter / X to the /r/therewasanattempt[35] subreddit with someone calling out another user for claiming Mamdani was "more implicated in the Epstein Files than Donald Trump," receiving over 4,900 upvotes and 90 comments in three days.
On February 2nd, Rolling Stone[36] published an article on the controversy, titled "Zohran Mamdani Is the Latest Victim of Epstein Files AI Slop."

January 2026 Release Reactions
Following the large batch of Epstein Files released by the DOJ on January 30th, 2026, social media users and content creators began posting their reactions and discoveries to various details about the documents as the release garnered virality on the internet.
For instance, on January 30th, a thread was posted to the /r/AskReddit[23] subreddit under the title "A Million More Epstein Files Just Got Released. What Kind Of Stuff Did You Guys Find, and How Did You React To It?" receiving over 38,000 upvotes and 4,500 comments in four days. Some of the top-voted comments in the thread included:
That a police chief tried to take him down for his interest in minors in 2006 and no one else saw the signs or chose to believe the victims
I don’t get how we can expect people to continue playing by the rules if there are no repercussions for these villains and those that enable them
It’s pretty awful how many terrible things are mentioned and the depth of people involved. I think we will see more unrest and the gap between elite and common man will just grow further and further apart. I feel it’s only a matter of time until society reaches a breaking point. I don’t know how we can trust anyone in positions of power anymore. These really are wild and insane times.
A story surrounding Bill Gates allegedly catching an STD and begging Epstein for antibiotics garnered significant attention amid the release in late January 2026. For example, a Telegraph article was shared to the /r/popculturechat[24] subreddit on January 30th about the detail, garnering over 87,000 upvotes and 3,200 comments in four days.
A spokesperson for Bill Gates later responded to the claims and backlash, saying that the accusations in the newly released files were "absurd," stating, "These claims are absolutely absurd and completely false. The only thing these documents demonstrate is Epstein’s frustration that he did not have an ongoing relationship with Gates and the lengths he would go to entrap and defame."[25]
Claims that some of the files, especially those involving President Donald Trump, were later redacted or deleted by the DOJ and then reuploaded also spread amid the release in early 2026.
For instance, a post to the /r/circled[26] subreddit included screenshots of an example of files involving Trump allegedly being deleted and then redacted multiple times on the DOJ site, receiving over 18,000 upvotes and 1,300 comments in four days.
On January 31st, 2026, YouTuber Coffeezilla uploaded a video titled "new epstein files are completely insane" to his alternative channel voidzilla, discussing details of the new documents, garnering over 4.4 million views, 217,000 likes and 22,700 comments in three days.
Reactions, memes and other discourse about the new Epstein Files also spread on X / Twitter in early 2026. On February 1st, X[27] user kosa12 posted a meme in which the slang term "chud" was found in the files, garnering over 1.9 million views, 63,000 likes and 210 replies in two days.

Also on February 1st, 2026, TikToker dylan.page posted a video covering some of the details, garnering over 338,600 likes and 2,400 comments in two days.
@dylan.page Got a lot of videos coming your way…

Related Memes
Gamer Epstein
Gamer Epstein or Jeffrey Epstein Gaming refers to a series of memes about Jeffrey Epstein being a gamer, inspired by several documents released as part of the Epstein Files released in early 2026, including a notice that his Xbox Live account was banned, an email about buying Fortnite VBucks, an email that suggests Epstein supported microtransactions in Call of Duty games and an email in which he sends Five Nights at Freddy's adult animations to someone.
Jeffrey Epstein 4chan Connection
Jeffrey Epstein 4chan Connection, also known as Jeffrey Epstein Created /pol/ or Jeffrey Epstein Christopher Poole Connection, refers to viral discourse surrounding documents unveiled in the January 2026 Epstein Files release by the Department of Justice (DOJ) that connect Jeffrey Epstein to 4chan creator Christopher Poole (also known as moot). According to the documents, Epstein and some of his colleagues reached out to Poole and had apparently used the site in the past for enigmatic purposes, linking threads and post numbers in their exchanges. Per the files, Epstein and Poole also met sometime in 2011, with Poole creating 4chan's infamous /pol/ (politically incorrect) imageboard shortly after. The discovery led to a widespread conspiracy theory in early 2026 that Epstein created the pol board as a way to manipulate people and bring about the downfall of democracy.
