About

Lesbian Pose refers to a series of memes claiming that a common pose where a person stands with their arms fanned out at their sides, palms up, is known as the "lesbian pose." The meme began in May 2021 when a teaser for The Owl House season 2 premiered, in which Amity, an openly lesbian character, is seen doing the pose. The memes gained viral spread over the following years as users applied the "lesbian pose" label to images of any character striking the same or similar pose.

Origin

On May 17th, 2021, the Disney Channel YouTube^[1] channel posted an introduction tease for The Owl House season 2, garnering over 1.9 million views in three years. Around the 00:11 second mark Amity is shown with her arms outstretched at her sides, her palms facing forward. On the same day, YouTuber^[2] myown_noanimations posted an edit titled "✨Lesbian Pose✨" in which they show the scene, along with other scenes of female cartoon characters striking similar poses, suggesting the pose denotes characters who are lesbians, garnering over 2.3 million views in three years (shown below).

Memes referring to the pose as the "lesbian pose" became increasingly popular shortly after the video was posted. On May 17th, 2021, a screenshot of Amity and Catra striking the pose was posted to /r/TheOwlHouse,^[3] titled, "The official 'Title sequence lesbian pose,'" garnering over 1,100 upvotes in three years.

On May 19th, 2021, a screenshot of Frieza from Dragon Ball Z striking a similar pose was posted to /r/theowlhouse^[4] in a post titled "the most famous uses of the 'lesbian pose' from history," garnering over 300 upvotes in three years. On May 20th, X^[5] user @halogenschein posted artwork based on the meme, garnering over 8,900 likes in the same span of time (shown below).

On the same day, YouTuber^[6] myown_noanimations posted a sequel to their original "lesbian pose" video, sharing further examples of characters striking the pose, garnering over 1.7 million views in three years (shown below).

On June 24th, 2023, a piece of fan art of Amity doing the post was posted to /r/TheOwlHouse^[7] titled, "Amity rocking the iconic lesbian pose 💜," garnering over 1,000 upvotes in a year. On July 6th, a post was made to /r/aaaaaaacccccccce^[8] asking, "I think most of us are familiar with the Lesbian pose. What's the AroAce pose?" garnering over 2,700 upvotes in a year.

On August 12th, a meme using an image of a Sonic the Hedgehog character striking the pose was posted to /r/MoonPissing,^[9] garnering over 800 upvotes in 11 months (shown below, left). On August 18th, an edit of the meme was posted to /r/Ultrakill^[10] that gained over 2,800 upvotes in the same span of time (shown below, right).It was reposted to /r/TheOwlHouse^[11] that day, garnering over 1,400 upvotes.

On May 12th, 2024, a meme compiling characters striking the pose, including Django from Ratatouille, was posted to /r/TheRatEmpire,^[12] garnering over 1,100 upvotes in two months (shown below).
