Lidl Oil refers to an object labeling meme spawned from an image of a man pouring olive oil onto a salad from a giant container.
Origin
On January 3rd, 2019, Redditor ReadManualBeforeUse posted to /r/croatia an advertisement for Lidl, a German supermarket chain, in which a man is pouring olive oil from a giant container onto a salad. The user used the caption "Jebena su mi ova Lidlova mumbo jumbo pakiranja"[1] (eng. "I fucking love these mumbo jumbo packages from Lidl"). The post gained 125 points (shown below).
Spread
In the following days, the image spread to other subreddits as an object labeling meme. For example, Redditor Craazzy_ posted an edit to /r/dankmemes on January 9th, 2019 that gained over 16,000 points[2] (shown below, left). A post on Facebook group UTS: Think Change Meme[3] the same day gained over 370 points (shown below, right).
Other popular posts include an /r/dankmemes post by jsmith2k12[4] that gained over 22,000 points (shown below, left). A joke about hentai posted to /r/animemes by thegreatmarker[5] gained over 3,600 points (shown below, right).
