About

Like You Trained His Father is a memorable quote said by Owen Lars in the Disney+ TV series Obi-Wan Kenobi.. The delivery of the line became an exploitable meme format where, in addition to roasting Obi-Wan, Owen is photoshopped in various scenes in the Star Wars universe roasting other characters.

Origin

On May 4th, 2022, the second trailer to Obi-Wan Kenobi was uploaded to Youtube.[1] Set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, the series depicts the titular protagonist's life in hiding from the Galactic Empire. During a scene in the trailer, Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Owen Lars that Luke Skywalker, Owen's nephew and adopted son, will one day need to be trained to be a Jedi. However, Owen does not want Obi-Wan involved in Luke's life and rebuttals's the offer by saying "like you trained his father," reminding Obi-Wan that his training of Anakin Skywalker, Luke's father, led to his fall to the Dark Side of the Force and apparent death (shown below).

The line was quickly picked up by members of the /r/PrequelMemes subreddit and soon started making memes of the scene shortly after the release of the trailer. XTREME-GAMER26[2] submitted to /r/PrequelMemes combining the scene between Owen and Obi-Wan with the Lie Down / Try Not to Cry / Cry a Lot meme format where it got over 19,000 upvotes (shown below, left). On May 6th, 2022, abca98 submitted to /r/PrequelMemes[3] rock faces reacting to Owen's roast towards Obi-wan where it has received over 33,000 upvotes (shown below, right.)

In the weeks leading up to the release of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the format saw Owen Lars interacting with other characters in the Star Wars universe. On May 7th, 2022, StSpyro[4] submitted to /r/PrequelMemes where Owen is interacting with Darth Maul from the TV show Star Wars Rebels. The post received over 17,000 upvotes (shown below, left). On May 10th, 2022, Dranem78[5] submitted to /r/PrequelMemes of Owen photoshopped in a scene between Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala towards the end of Revenge of the Sith. The post has received over 25,000 upvotes (shown below, right).
