Local Woman Greta Gerwig is an image macro series featuring a photograph of actor and director Greta Gerwig in a red sweater and high-heels. In April 2020, the image went viral on Twitter, where some joked that she looked like a normal, local woman.
Origin
On March 26th, 2020, the San Francisco Chronicle[1] published the photograph of Gerwig during her promotion of the film Greenberg (shown below).
Spread
On April 12th, 2020, Twitter[2] user @GREENKNIGHT shared the photograph with the caption "how is this picture of greta gerwig real." The tweet received more than 26,000 likes and 1,000 retweets in less than two days (shown below, left).
Following the post, others began sharing the photographs and comparing it to modern images of the director (example below, center).
Others joked about what the image reminds them of, characterizing her as a stereotypical white woman of her generation. Twitter[3] user @georgeciveris tweeted, "She’s a Barnard graduate from Sacramento who loves Little Women, what do you people want exactly." The tweet received more than 9,400 likes and 260 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
