Marco Rubio Hugs Ivanka Trump refers to an photograph of Republican Senator Marco Rubio hugging the daughter of President Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump. The photograph was mocked for the way it appeared that Ivanka did not reciprocate Rubio's eager hug.

Origin

On June 20th, 2017, Twitter user @ericawerner^[1] posted an image of Rubio greeting Trump as she arrived at the capitol (shown below, left). Shortly after the photo was posted online, Twitter user @davidmackau^[2] posted a comparison between the photo and a scene from Arrested Development that gained over 1,100 retweets and 3,600 likes (shown below, right).

Spread

The jokes continued to spread through Twitter that day, leading to a Twitter Moment.^[3] Some of the more popular jokes include one by @evepeyser^[4] that brought up Marco Rubio's Water Break and gained over 1,100 retweets (shown below, left) and a joke by @donmoyn^[5] that imagined Rubio waiting for hours to hug Ivanka that gained over 630 retweets (shown below, right).

After the spread of the jokes, both Rubio and Ivanka took the moment in good humor, each responding with jokes of their own about the incident. Rubio's response was covered by the BBC.^[6]
