Mark Gormley is a singer-songwriter from Pensacola, Florida, who became an Internet celebrity after several of his music videos began spreading online in January of 2009.

Origin

According to an article in the online video news blog Videogum,[3] Gormley began making green screen music videos with local Florida musician Phil Thomas Katt in 2006. On August 1st, 2007, Katt uploaded Gormley's music video for the song "Little Wings" to TheUnchartedZone YouTube channel (shown below). The video remained relatively obscure until January of 2009 and subsequently recieved over 920,000 views within the next three years.



Spread

On January 13th, 2009, the web video blog Videogum[3] published a post titled "This is your dad's music video," which highlighted several of Gormley's videos including "Without You" (shown below, left). Over the next several years, it became the most viewed Gormley video with over 1.79 million views and 4,200 comments. On January 27th, Videogum published a follow-up post titled "Mark Gormley Talks About His Internet Fame; Remains Adorable and Grounded," which highlighted an interview with Gormley uploaded to TheUnchartedZone the same day (shown below, right).



On January 21st, 2009, Terry Howard of Cocoa, FL created the MarkGormley.com[5] fansite, which included embeds of Gormley's music videos. On February 23rd, 2009, Urban Dictionary[6] user devotedacolyte submitted an entry for "Mark Gormley," which mocked Gormley's signature move known as the "power stance"

On January 7th, 2010 The UnchartedZone uploaded a new Mark Gormley video for his song "Sing Me Your Song." The video was subsequently highlighted by the Internet news blog Urlesque[7] on January 20th.

Personal Life

According to Wikipedia,[1] Gormley began playing the guitar was a teenager and started composing his own music in the mid-1970s. In an interview with G4TV,[8] Gormley revealed that he recorded a demo for his songs while he was stationed as a marine in Scotland and was unable to receive a recording contract.
