Markiplier Metro Man refers to a deepfake combination between YouTuber Markiplier and Metro Man from the animated film Mega Mind. Starting in the summer of 2020, the character has been used on Reddit as a reaction image.

Origin

On July 15th, 2020, YouTuber Vita Minimum posted a deepfake of Markiplier crossed with Metro Man from Mega Mind, gaining over 9,000 views (shown below).



Spread

A still image from the deepfake began circulating on Reddit in mid-September, often paired with captions about getting interrupted or being put in an awkward situation. One of the earliest examples was posted September 15th, 2020 on /r/memes[1] by user Nameless264, gaining over 55,000 points (shown below, left). The following day, it became a popular template on /r/dankmemes. For example, user lil-raving[2] posted an example on September 16th that gained over 66,000 points (shown below, right).

Other popular examples include a post by mijuzz7[3] in /r/dankmemes that gained over 21,000 points and a post by Demonix_Hermit[4] that gained over 24,000 points (shown below, right). The spread of the meme was covered by Stayhipp.[5]
