Me + a Random Note on My Phone is a side-by-side image macro series featuring a selfie and a randomly selected note found on one's smartphone.
Origin
On December 1st, 2020, Twitter [1] user @neoguristirfry tweeted a selfie with a note that reads, "I'm not a virgin bc I still say 'School Nights' Im a virgin bc Ive never had sex before in my life." The tweet received more than 400 likes and 275 retweets in less than one week (shown below).
Spread
That day, the meme began to thread via quote retweets, creating a chain of tweets that helped to raise the profile of the format. However, it was not until celebrities began sharing the meme that it grew in popularity. On December 3rd, actor Mark Ruffalo shared[2] a variation of the meme that received more than 60,000 likes and 3,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).
That day, Twin Peaks star Kyle MacLachlan posted[3] a vartion. The post received more than 16,000 likes and 1,800 retweets in less than one week (shown below, center).
The following day, on December 4th, the verified account for the television series Fleabag published[4] a variation that received more than 21,000 likes and 2,900 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).
