About

Megumin is a character of Japanese light novel series and anime KonoSuba. She is an Arch Wizard of the Crimson Demon Clan, and the first person to join Kazuma's party. She is depicted as a young, 14-year-old girl obsessed with explosion magic, investing all of her stats to increase her explosion powers, despite a single explosion attack wasting all of her energy, rendering her practically useless.

Origin

Megumin is introduced in the first chapter of the web novel series KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World! released on December 20th, 2012.[1] The web novel was later reworked into a light novel on October 1st, 2013. The first issue of the manga was released on September 9th, 2014, while the first episode of the anime, This Self Proclaimed Goddess and Reincarnation in Another World! premiered on January 14th, 2016.

Characteristics

Megumin is a boisterous, loud, and eccentric 14-year-old girl (13 when she was introduced and 17 in the web novel)[1] with a flair for theatrics. As a Crimson Demon, she shares many of her clan's characteristics such as displaying "chuunibyou" antics (meaning childish aspirations). She also quite arrogant and cocky, constantly boasting about her destructive powers, but she easily drops the act when put in desperate situations.

Though Megumin boasts as though she is a supremely powerful wizard, she is quite childish and immature, and sensitive about her underdeveloped body, becoming aggressive or despondent when called or treated like a little girl. Megumin also has the most common sense and is one of the only characters to acknowledge the bizarre and cultish nature of Aqua's religious followers, despite not believing that she is a real goddess. She also fairly intelligent and fairly adapt at magic, and very caring about her comrades.

At the end of KonoSuba movie, Megumin offered Kazuma the chance to allocate her points for other magic, but Kazuma increased her explosion stats instead, and when she next casts the spell, she releases a nuclear-scaled explosion which results in a heart-shaped mushroom cloud.

Online Presence

Following the run of the first and second season of the anime, Megumin acquired a status as a waifu in the anime community, as well as receiving 6th highest vote in Newtype 's 2015-16 Best Female Character Award and received the most "Other" votes in Crunchyroll's Best Anime Awards 2016.[2][3] She also becomes a popular meme subject, particularly due to her obsession with explosion magic. "Explosion" itself became a joke associated with the character. "Explosion" is the only spell Megumin ever uses, and the word would be commonly spammed in comment sections of KonoSuba-related parody and roleplay social media accounts.

Due to the character's popularity in memes, Megumin is often referred to by fans as "Megumeme"[8][9] (example shown below, right). 4chan's /a/ board used to hold "Megumin Monday" threads during the show's original run in 2016 and 2017[10] (example shown below, left).
