Milo Dancing, also known as Morbius Dance Scene and Matt Smith Dancing, is a scene from the 2022 Marvel superhero film Morbius in which the main antagonist Milo (played by Matt Smith) is shown dancing, half-naked, to the song "EKSE (Have Sex)" by Off The Meds. The scene went viral on Twitter in May 2022, inspiring memes, remixes and an 'X Dances To' gimmick account.

Origin

On April 1st, 2022, the superhero film Morbius premiered in the United States.[1] In one scene of the film, the character Milo, portrayed by actor Matt Smith, is shown dancing in celebration of his restored health and newfound abilities while getting dressed (scene shown below). In the scene, Milo dances to the song "Ekse" by the band Off The Meds, with the lyrics of the song being mainly in Zulu and Tsotsitaal.

On May 15th, 2022, Twitter[2] user @ITSYOBOITOM1 uploaded the scene, with the video gaining over one million views, 3,600 retweets and 24,100 likes in two weeks (shown below).


On May 17th, 2022, YouTuber[3] MΞ»FDOMiNUS uploaded the scene, with the post accumulating over 456,000 views in two weeks.

Spread

On May 16th, 2022, 'X Dances To' gimmick account Milo Dancing to Your Favorite Songs (@ThePeakOfCinema) was launched,[4] posting sped-up edits in which the song was replaced with other music. On the same day, the account tweeted[5] the first edit, in which the dance was set to "Empire Ants" by the band Gorillaz. The edit, captioned, "Never mess with the Reddit Nation ever again," gained over 10,200 views, 60 retweets and 250 likes in two weeks (shown below).


The account posted two more edits[6][7] on May 16th, 2022, resuming posting on May 24th. On May 25th, the account posted[8] its first high-engagement meme, an A Good Book Can Change Your Life meme, that gained over 27,200 views, 250 retweets and 1,800 likes in one week.

In the following days, multiple edits posted by the gimmick account achieved success on Twitter. For example, a "Friday Night" edit posted[9] by the account on May 28th gained over 28,900 views, 780 retweets and 2,800 likes in three days (shown below).


Additionally, other users also posted memes based on or referencing the scene. For example, on May 27th, 2022, Twitter[10] user @RawbertBeef posted a screenshot of incorrect lyrics from the song "EKSE" submitted to lyrics website Genius, questioning their accuracy. The post gained over 6,400 retweets and 104,600 likes in four days (shown below).
