Mitski x Jesus Edits refers to a series of fan edits made on TikTok that use movie scenes of Jesus Christ and songs by American singer Mitski, predominantly from her 2023 album "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We" and other songs from the singer's career. The unexpected pairing of the singer's lyrics with biblical moments led to viral discussions in August 2023 among Mitski fans and other TikTokers who found the edits peculiar, and hilarious.
Origin
The earliest known Mitski x Jesus edit was uploaded on May 2nd, 2022, by TikTok[1] user @jesus.lcves, who paired Mitski's 2018 "Nobody" song with a clip from the 2017 TV show "The Chosen." The post (shown below) amassed roughly 40,000 plays and 720 likes in a year.

After the release of Mitski's latest album "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We" in September 2023, the virality of the aforementioned Mitski x Jesus edit resurfaced on TikTok. For instance, on September 19th, 2023, TikTok[2] user @jesustaylorsversion uploaded a ranking of Mitski songs based on "how Jesus coded the song is." The post (shown below, left) amassed roughly 55,000 plays and 7,900 likes in two months. The same creator posted[3] a viral Jesus edit on September 7th, in which he used the song "I Want You" paired with clips from different movies depicting Jesus Christ (shown below, right), which garnered over 1 million plays and 277,000 likes in two months.
