About
Mohair Sweater Guys refers to a series of viral images featuring pensive-looking men sporting large and fuzzy mohair sweaters and outfits. The images first started going viral on Twitter and TikTok in late 2022 and were primarily sourced from a Pinterest community of mohair and fine textile sweater enjoyers.
Origin
Mohair is a fabric or thread made from the hair of an Angora goat, indigenous to Turkey. The fiber is durable and resilient, often exhibiting a glow or sheen, and is used to add shine when mixed with other fibers. The fiber also takes to dye well, ensuring a vibrant and lasting color on the textile.[10]
On an unknown date, Pinterest[1] user @mikolavojcehivskij0 created their account and began uploading images of themselves in a variety of mohair sweaters and outfits. The earliest known image to be re-pinned by another user was shared to the board "коля,"[2] and repinned on April 22nd, 2019 (seen below, left). The image received an unknown amount of engagement on the platform. The user went on to post various other images in a variety of mohair outfits, the most notable and reposted of which is shown below, right.[3]
Another notable figure in the Pinterest mohair sweater community is user @downeykelly97,[4] who posts images of himself in various sweaters and outfits, sometimes wearing long synthetic wigs.[5] Popular images from his page can be seen below.
